Surgical Instrument Makers of America before 1900
Research notes from Dr. Michael Echols, American Civil War Surgical Antiques
Below is a list of some of the better-known American surgical instrument makers in business prior to 1900. For other makers, details, and dates, see Edmonson's: American Surgical Instrument Makers, An Illustrated History, by Norman Publishing or check for Edmonson in Google 'books'. Using Edmonson's book you can take the information from maker labels, like those shown below from my collection, to date a surgical set or instrument. Without this information and knowledge about the type of instruments in a set or kit, dating instruments is very difficult at best.
If this list of American makers from the 1800's does not answer your questions, I would suggest you go beyond a usual web search and use Google 'books' for much more detailed information on instrument makers.
