Here are some guidelines to follow before buying a new or used Supercharger Kit on Ebay.
There is no doubt that you will find many great deals on Supercharger kits as a buyer on Ebay. A Supercharger Kit can be new or used so here are some guidelines to look at before making your decision.
New Supercharger Kit:
- Supercharger Kits are vehicle specific. Make sure the kit you are looking at is designed for your application.
- Most Supercharger Kits are designed as a Complete System, so it is important to make sure that the kit is complete.
- If the Supercharger Kit you are viewing is not complete, make sure to do research on what parts will be needed in order to make the supercharger function on your vehicle. (At SuperchargersOnline.com, we have ran into many customers who thought they have got a good deal from other buyers on Ebay, but after finding out how much the extra parts cost, it ends up they are paying hundreds and even thousands over what they expected.)
- You might find "Electric Supercharger Kits." These "Blowers" usually cause more restrictions than results and can cause serious damage to your engine. Real Supercharger Kits cost $1,500-$10,000 and there are many items involved in these systems like belts, brackets, piping, fuel and tuning components. These "Electric Supercharger Kits" only cost $20.00-$200.00 and a lot of them resemble cabin blowers that are used to vent out cabins in boats. These units are not designed to be used as an engine enhancement, and in my eyes they are a scam.
- Some Supercharger Systems will come with a manufacture warranty. These warranties usually are for 1-4 yeas depending on the manufacture. Make sure and check to see if the kit will come with a warranty and ask how many years it will come with.
Used Supercharger Kits:
- There are a lot of parts involved with a Supercharger Kit. Make sure when buying a used Supercharger Kit that everything is in the kit and that nothing is missing. (This is our most common call that we get at SuperchargersOnline.com when someone has bought a kit off of Ebay. Usually a major part is missing, for example: the fuel pump, fuel injectors, computer programmer, pullies...etc.)
- Before buying the Supercharger see if you can get the serial number off the Supercharger compressor. Just send a message to the seller and ask for it. Most Supercharger compressors have a serial number that is stamped on the unit itself. Once this serial number is obtained you can contact the manufacture to see if there has been any service calls on it. The manufacture can tell if the unit has been rebuilt. They can even pull up notes to see if the owner has called in get the unit serviced. (Sad to say we get calls at SuperchargersOnline.com all the time from people who have bought a supercharger compressor from Ebay, just to find out that there is amajor problem with it and that they need to send in the unit to the manufacture to get it rebuilt. To rebuild a supercharger compressor, it can cost anywhere from $400-$1000.) It is very important to find out if there is anything wrong with the main Supercharger Compressor.
- most Supercharger Kits are vehicle specific and it is very difficult to retro fit a kit onto a car it is not designed for. Just because the engine is a 4.6L that does not mean it will fit on all 4.6L engines. Make sure the kit is designed for the application you are seeking.
- Ask how many miles are on the supercharger and ask why they are selling it. Supercharger Compressors have bearings inside of them. So units with high mileage on time might need to get serviced.
These are some topics that are fresh off my mind so hopefully this will help at least one person out. There is no doubt that adding a Supercharger kit will add serious horsepower to your vehicle. So have fun and be safe!
