My name is Teresa Bankston and I have been selling on eBay since 2002, and I have been selling on a consignment basis since 2004. I'm a PowerSeller and Registered Trading Assistant.

I am also an avid reader. I love to read and I read anything and everything! But I am especially fond of reading non-fiction about subjects that interest me. I have read dozens of books on the subject of eBay Selling. I thought I would share my thoughts on several of the books out there and suggest a few that you may not have heard of or had time to read yourself.

For Beginners:

  • For the beginning seller I would highly recommend The Official eBay Bible, by Jim "Griff" Griffith. It gives you a solid foundation on the basics. Information on buying and selling, how to write effective auction listings, photography tips, and even a starter session on writing html. I first read this book after I had already begun selling, but still was able to glean some useful information from it. I still use it as reference material when I have a memory lapse concerning html tricks.
  • eBay The Smart Way, by Joseph Sinclair is another choice book for the beginner seller. Again, good solid information for beginners.

Intermediate Sellers & Above:

  • The above books could still be of benefit here.
  • eBay Business The Smart Way, by Joseph Sinclair. This book goes a step further than his similar book mentioned above. This gives more details on how to begin and grow an actual business via selling on eBay. It takes a look at more business-related issues, such as drop-shipping, inventory control, auction management, supplies needed and so forth.
  • eBay Timesaving Techniques For Dummies, by Marsha Collier is a great book to keep as a business resource. A more in-depth look at auction management services, photography issues, business licenses, and much more. I find myself re-skimming through this one often to find new tricks and techniques for getting organized.
  • HTML & XHTML - The Definitive Guide, by Chuck Musciano & Bill Kenedy. An HTML guide on a suggested reading list for sellers? Yeah! I took a class on HTML a couple of years ago and realized I could use much of what I learned to make very nice templates for my eBay listings! You may not learn a whole lot from purchasing this book and reading it without taking a class, but you can gather enough information from it to make very nice auction templates. This is a much used resource that I find myself referring to quite often.
  • How to Do Everything with Your eBay Business, by Greg Holden. More of the business side of being an eBay seller. If you are planning on using your selling on eBay as a source of income for your family, this is a good book to read.
  • How to Buy, Sell & Profit on eBay, by Adam Ginsberg. I have mixed emotions about this one.  He offered some useful information, but I often found the meaning behind him writing this book was to plug some other products that he offers on the internet (which I have not tried.) There are some great tips in here though, just be forewarned that there are several "plugs" for his products and not much detail on how you can succeed without them.

PowerSellers & Wanna-Be's:

  • eBay PowerSeller Secrets, by Debra Schepp and Brad Schepp. Lots of tips and tricks straight from PowerSellers themselves. How to research your market effectively, best sources for products, managing inventory, etc. All taken to the next level for heavy-hitting sellers (and those who strive to be.) There are several other books on becoming a PowerSeller that I have read, but this was by far the most informative.

Consignment Selling:

  • How To Start and Run an eBay Consignment Business, by Skip McGrath. I am a huge Skip McGrath fan and this book is the icing on the cake. Very informative and thorough. This does give some of the basics of starting an eBay business and a very light brush of info on creating effective listings, titles and so forth; but not so much of the basics that a seasoned seller would lose interest. He covers licensing, marketing tips, creating a website. He even gives his website at the very beginning of the book, where there are copies of contracts and tracking sheets that can be downloaded. Very informative book. 5 Stars from me and I wasn't new to the consignment business when I read it.
  • The eBay Entrepreneur, by Chistopher Spencer. Another great book on consignment. (And I M NOT just saying that because one of my stories is featured on page 137!) Seriously, I have read the entire thing from a highly objective point of view and found a ton of interesting and useful information. Everything from when you should consider moving your business from home to a physical location, marking tips, creating a website, bookkeeping, organization... I believe this book will be available for sale at the end of September, 2006.
This is far from an exclusive list of useful information found in books regarding selling on eBay, but these are some of my favorites. If you are an eBay seller and are wanting to grow your business and make it everything you dream it can be, these books are a great place to start.

I hope you have found some useful information here! If you find this guide interesting or informative, would you mind taking a minute to vote "Yes"? Thank you so much and Happy Selling!
