Stripe- A Guide to Stripe & Fashion
Stripe is the name of Helen Wang's sister line of designer apparel for everyday wear. Ms. Wang grew up in China and was slated to become a doctor like her parents. However, a stint at a boarding school for girls in England inspired her to begin fashion design in her dorm room.
The sheer boredom enforced by school uniforms brought out Wang's creative streak, and she followed her muse to Parson's School of Design. After graduating, Wang burst onto the fashion scene in the mid-90s, determined once again to do battle with monotony and boredom. This time it was the monotony of 90s casual dressing, so laid back as to lack feminine sizzle, that inspired Wang to launch a collection of well-fitting dresses that would put some fun back into fashion.
Wang's approach was a hit in the fashion world, and her clothing has appeared on such style conscious television shows as Sex and the City. Her designs tend to incorporate comfort, simplicity, and attention to interesting detail, which creates looks that offer a classic silhouette. Her Stripe line sticks to these same basic themes of comfort and simplicity while being more suitable for casual dressing.
After the birth of her daughter, Helen Wang also launched a line of children's clothing. However, all this style and comfort costs a pretty penny: prices for Wang's clothing at high-end retailers rarely dip below $150 and sometimes creep toward $500 for a dress. Prices for clothing in the Stripe line tend to be a little lower.
