Hello there! My name is Tammy and I love toys. I thought I would take a moment to write a guide about one of the most popular girl's doll lines of the 1980's, Strawberry Shortcake. I hope that this guide will aid the collector who is just starting to get their Shortcake Collection together and may not be sure what parts go with what doll. Perhaps this guide will also help sellers to better understand the dolls as well.

Strawberry Shortcake dolls first began in 1979, and continued being made until the mid 1980's. The dolls were all named after berries and other sweet things, and were each scented to smell like their name. They were later revived in 1991 by a different toy manufacturer, but only lasted 2 years. They were brought back again in 2002 (more than 20 years after their first appearance) and are still available in stores. Even the very first line of dolls came in variations (such as Party Pleasers or Baby versions), but this guide will help you to identify the typical SSC Character, and their pet.

THE ORIGINAL CHARACTERS & THEIR PETS:

Strawberry Shortcake. Her pet is a pink (with white polka dots) cat called Custard. Strawberry wears a large pink hat with a red embroidered strawberry on top, and little strawberries printed on the hat. She has straight, red-brown hair. She wears a red ress with a white apron. She wears striped green and white tights and brown shoes.

Huckleberry Pie. The only boy in Strawberryland. His pet is a brown dog with green and white striped ears, named Pupcake. Huckleberry wears a large yellow rubbery hat with an embroidered bunch of huckleberries embroidered on the front. He has straight, red-brown hair. He wears a light purple shirt, blue overalls, a green and white striped neck scarf and brown shoes.

Raspberry Tart. Her pet is a brown and pink money named Rhubarb. Raspberry wears a large pink hat with an embroidered raspberry on the top and a green and white striped panel in front. She has longer, curly pink hair. She wears a pink shirt with pinky-purple checkered arms and shorts. She wears green and white striped tights and pinky-purple shoes.

Blueberry Muffin. Her pet is a light yellow mouse (with a flower for a nose) named Cheesecake. Blueberry wears a large rubbery blue hat with an embroidered bunch of blueberries on the front. Her light blue hair is done up in 2 pigtails to the sides and held with blue ribbon. She wears a blue dress with blue and white checkered arms. She wears green and white striped tights and blue shoes.

Angel Cake. Her pet is a purple skunk named Souffle. Angel has longer white hair, with attached gold ribbons in her hair. She wears a light blue dress with a bow, green and white striped tights and purple shoes.

Lemon Meringue. Her pet is a green frog names Frappe. Lemonwears a light yellow slightly pointed hat, with 2 pink flowers. She has curly yellow hair. She wears a yellow dress with polkadots, green and white striped tights and yellow shoes.

Lime Chiffon. Her pet is a green and pink parrot called Parfait. Lime wears a pink hat (that rather looks like a blunted ice cream cone) and has green, slightly curled hair. She has a pale green dress with white flowers along the bottom. She wears green and white striped tights and pinky-brown shoes.

Orange Blossom. Her pet is an oversized yellow and orange butterfly named Marmalade. Orange is the only negro doll. She has a yellow and orange hat with an embroidered white blossom on top. She has curly black hair. She wears a yellow dress with white polkadots and an orange frill at the neck of the dress. She wears green and white striped tights and orange shoes.

Cherry Cuddler. Her pet is a white goose wearing a red bonnet, called Gooseberry. Cherry is one of the younger kids of Strawberryland and is smaller than the others. She wears a dark pink hat with scallped edges and a felt green leaf on top. She has pink hair that is mostly covered by her hat. She wears a white dress with 2 red cherries on the front. She wears green and white striped tights and pink slippers.

Apricot. Her pet is a white rabbit named Hopsalot. Apricot is one of the younger kids of Strawberryland and is smaller than the others. She wears a peach colored hat with a blue felt leaf on top. Her hair is white and is mostly covered by her hat. She wears a 1pc jumpsuit that has peach arms and white overalls and peach cuffs. She wears blue slippers.

Apple Dumplin. Her pet is a green turtle named TeaTime. Apple is one of the younger kids of Strawberryland and is smaller than the others. Some people have argued that Apple might be a boy, not a girl. Apple wears a yellow hat with green polkadots. She has orange hair. She wears a 1 pc yellow jumpsuit with a red apple embroidered on the front, and green and white striped slippers.

Buttercookie. Her pet is a yellow bear named Jellybear. Buttercookie is probably the youngest kid in Strawberryland and is smaller than the others. Buttercookie wears a large yellow bonnet. She has yellow hair that is mostly covered by her hat. She has a 1pc jumpsuit that has yellow arms and a white body with yellow flowers on it.

The Purple Pieman. He has a pet dark purple crow named Cackle, the blackberry bird (which can perch on his arm). The Purple Pieman is the "bad guy" of Strawberryland, and is an adult. he wishes to steal the Strawberryland berries to make into a pie. He is much larger than the other dolls and has long arms and legs. He wears a bakers hat that is purple on top and checkered on the band. He has grey-white hair and a long, wispy purple moustache. He wears a blue short-sleeved shirt with a long white baker's apron and carries a brown spoon. His pants and shoes are permanantly attached and are dark purple.

These are the original characters. After a few successful years, more characters were created and made into dolls. I will write another guide for you, covering the second half of the 80's Strawberry Shortcake Doll line.
