On December 6th 2006 President Bush signed into law the Stolen Valor Act. What is it and how does it affect the collector ? This new law makes it a crime to sell, trade, export, barter or exchange US medals, Ribbons and Medal Citation Certificates as well as copies and of medals or any original or reproduction medal Documents. Further Anyone claiming to be a veteran and wearing any US medals, ribbon or lapel pin is also a crime. Unless you were officially awarded them for Military Service and it is on your DD-214 file.  What can you do ? If you are a collector of medals you are out of business period.  So all collectors should write their Congressman and Senator about this law and make your concerns known as the collector seems to have been over looked. I do not collect medals myself  but if  thousands of collectors from all 50 states write they can redress this law due to inquires made on behalf of collectors in a future session by your Elected officials in Washington DC . Keep it short to the point and do not go into a tirate, ask for answers to specfic questions  and most of all show respect and dignity to your Elected officials. Ask what thought went into collectors or former service men that need to sell their memorbilia due to an illness or no family members are left alive to pass it on too. Demonstrate that with all the good intentions of the law it also has many drawbacks for ordinary people wanting to collect American historical items. How much you appreciate the scarifices of the men in Armed Forces of all eras. Without any discussion except by your self and friends this will stay a law just as written and signed into law by the President of the United States of America forever. It is up to many collectors and medal dealers to see what if any  specific changes can be made in the future. My question is can you sell a valid soldiers uniform with the ribbon bar on it ? My only opinon here is the answer is no to this as well.
