I love old books but hate the musty smell of them when they have been stored in someone's basement.  The smells set off my allergies! 

Find a container with a lid or cover that will fit the dimensions of your books standing up:  liquor carton, plastic garbage can, metal filing cabinet, plastic storage bin.  Make sure that the container is dry, clean and does not stink. 

Place several solid air fresheners of the same scent (Glade, Air Wicks ) inside of the container.  Smell a variety of the air fresheners to make sure the scent is pleasant.  Carefully place your books inside of the container in an upright position.  Use bookends to keep the books upright to prevent the corners from being damaged.  Close the cover tightly.  In about 24 hours, the books shouldn't smell musty.
