New on-line companies let us rent some of Canon's most desireable lenses for a week or two without breaking the bank and delivered right to our door: Examples: the Canon 17-40mm f/4.0L, one week = $30.00. The Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro, one week = $25.00.
The total round trip shipping charge (both ways) is also exceedingly fair. A prepaid insured USPS Priority mailer they supply for shipment round trip (example: to NJ) costs around $15.00 total for either lens.
Until quite recently, if you could even find a place that rented professional lenses, it was expensive, $40-$60.00 per day per lens, the selections limited and renting with some brick and mortars usually came with its commensurate hassles. That has changed with the advent of these two on line rentals companies; Rentglass.com and the newcomer, Ziplens.com.
A typical instance for most of us where renting can be invaluable. We want to improve our photos. We spend countless hours reading every review we can get our hands on about lenses and their capabilities. We narrow the field down to one or two. We then may ask friends or professionals. Finally we select and then buy the lens…hooray…, only to discover that after all that, it doesn’t quite measure up to expectations. Now what? With most decent camera houses, we can return an item, but there can be restocking charges, return shipping costs etc and also the possibility of delays in the return of our money.
Two on line renting companies in particular
have opened up the exciting possibility of experiencing first hand how that expensive Canon Lens performs without making any buying commitment. The two companies: Rentglass.com followed more recently by Ziplens.com

Like everything else, those who have patience have the advantage
as often the lens you want may be out of stock. Both companies will tell you when the lens will be available and they will reserve it for you. Both ship promptly within 48 hours of the order (and or availability).
I’m now beginning to wonder how many of those I see walking around with an expensive L actually own it. The last two weeks I freely admit I was one of those that… didn’t! That wonderful Canon 24-70 f/.2.8L I tried out is now on my list of “gotta haves!” Now where did my wife hide my MasterCard this time? Best regards, Steve
