In today's world it is extremely important to protect yourself from identity theft. Although I am not a professional at this, I do have a few tips to help you get started.
Your Personal Checks
The next time you order your checks. Only have your First and Middle initial printed on them along with your last name. When you do this you are making it harder for someone that steals your check book to know what name to sign to the checks. So when your checks come to the bank signed as Marie instead of Mark, this will raise a red flag to them.
Your Credit Cards
On the back of every credit card is an area for you to sign. I highly suggest you not sign this and instead in capital letters right "REQUIRE A PHOTO ID". This will prevent anyone from trying to forge your signature while using your card.
Paying Bills
Paying your credit card bill is hard enough. But, having your credit card number stolen in the process is worse. When paying by check to your credit card company Never write your card number in the "memo" line. Instead just put the last 4 numbers. This will ensure anyone that handles your check will not be able to access your card number unless they are supposed to.
Photocopy your Wallet
Place all the contents of your wallet in a copy machine. Copy EVERYTHING including the back of your cards. Your ID, your credit cards, etc. Keep this in a safe place. This way if you ever loose it or it is stolen you have everything you need to provide to the police and credit card companies/banks. Also be sure to keep all the credit card agency phone numbers handy.
Immediate Steps to take if you are a Victim of Theft
Cancel ALL credit cards immediately.
File a Police report where the items where stolen from. This shows the banks and credit card companies that you were diligent in reporting.
Call all 3 credit reporting agencies to place a fraud alert on your name and social security number. This will ensure that any credit applications that are made against your credit reports will require your authorization first.
