Step rings - how to choose the right one for your camera lens
Hi everyone: My name is An, aka Photo Xpress and I have been selling camera accessories on eBay for almost a year. One of the questions that we often received from other eBay members is 'I have a SLR lens and I will like to attach a filter that's bigger than the lens, how do I know if this is the right step ring for my lens.'
I will like to take this oppurtunity to demostrate a few simple steps to determine the right size of step ring for your camera lens.
Material: all you need is a pen, a piece of paper, and a metric ruler (mm).
Step 1 - Write down the following on a piece of paper, Step _________ ring, size: ________-_________mm. You will have 3 blanks to fill.
Step 2 - Check the front element of your lens. It should have a filter mount and a filter diamter. You will need to look for this symbol.
You just found the filter diameter for the lens. Write this down in the 2nd blank. In this case, we have a 58mm filter diamter.
Step __________ ring, 58-_________mm
Step 3 - Look on the edge of the filter and locate the filter diameter size.
In this case, we have a 55mm filter diamtere. Write this down in the 3rd blank.
Step _________ ring, 58-55mm
Step 4 - If the first number is smaller than the second number, you will need a step up ring. Otherwise, you need a step down ring. In this case, 58 is greater thant 55. We will need a step down ring.
Step down ring, 58-55mm.
Please note: the sizes may not be printed on some lens and filters. In this case, use a metric ruler and measure the diameter of your lens and filter.
That's it~ Please visit my eBay store, Photo Xpo.
You will find a wide selection of step rings there.
Thanks for reading.
