Starting an eBay business may be overwhelming to you. I just want to share a little story about me that may help you get your start in business.
When I first started flying, I was in a helicopter called the TH-55. Think of a bubble with a stick poking out the back of it. It was just a little tiny helicopter, but when I stepped into it for the first time, all I could see was a thousand gauges, a million buttons, all these things you had to manipulate. Radios and pedals, it was just overwhelming. I thought, “Oh, my God, there’s no way I’m ever going to figure out how to work all of this.” As helicopter pilot, you have to use all of your body parts to make the aircraft fly. For instance, you have to use the pedals to turn the tail left and right. There’s a thing called a collective on your left hand side, and you pull it up and down to basically go up or down in the air. There’s also a little throttle that’s kind of like a motorcycle throttle, that you use to keep the RPMs up while you’re pulling up and down on the collective. Then, in between your legs is a thing called the cyclic, and if you push forward on the cyclic, you move the aircraft forward; left, you go left; right, you go right; back, you go back. So, now you’re using all those things and you still have to push buttons and look at all the gauges the entire time you are flying it!
What I did was take it one step at a time. I learned the basics. I started off with a foundation, and went with it. You can do the same. There are many resources right on eBay to help you get started with your business: Getting Started , Tips for new users ,The Learning Center , eBay University There are many resources that will help you get started, this information will guide you through the basics, help build your eBay foundation, and possibly get your business started on the right track.
You may be able to visualize this better. Think of the Wizard of OZ as Toto pulls the curtain away. He is rolling a ball with one hand, pulling a lever with the other; each foot is working in harmony to create the Great and Powerful OZ. All of these controls are like parts of your business: eBay, PayPal, Banking, Internet etc. Getting them to work in harmony can be an overwhelming task at first.
I’ll tell you about my first hover. When I first lifted the aircraft off the ground, and I was in full control of the helicopter, what happens—and this happens to everybody—is you over-control. Getting started you may take a right turn in your life. What happens is you over-control by coming back to the left too much or too fast, and you overreact. What happened to me in the helicopter was instead of hovering, I was doing figure eights. I would push the cyclic all the way to the right stop, and I’d pull back to the left, and then I’d end up going back to the right. I was making huge figure eights—they were probably twenty-foot circles in the air—and I’m supposed to be hovering over a dime. But after about four hours—it was amazing. After about four hours, boom! I picked it up and it just stayed right over the ground. It didn’t move, it didn’t do any figure eights anymore, it stayed straight, I was at a perfect hover, all of the controls were in perfect harmony with each other – I had found my hover button.
As you get started with your eBay business think about how not to over-control it. My advice would be to make small incremental shifts to the parts of your business that need it, rather than erratically pushing to the stops. What you will find is that instead of making figure eights around your family you will be able to make your adjustments small enough that your family can fly with you without puking their guts out.
Hovering for me was the congratulations part. That’s when I knew I was getting there and began to feel success. And then, I had to learn to use the radios, so there’s always the next level. That will happen to you in your business growth, and I’ll tell you, right when you think you’ve got everything down, and you’ve got that aircraft under control, your life under control, boom! You’re going to transition to something new. Some new thing or new step is going to come into your life, something that’s going to take you in a new direction. For me, it was jumping into a Huey. A UH-1 aircraft is the one they always show on those Vietnam War movies. When I stepped into that cockpit, oh my God, there were probably about forty times as many buttons and controls and knobs to spin, and I went through the same thing—except this time I had a foundation beneath me. I picked it up and went right into a hover, no problem. It was right there, steady as a rock.
So as you transition and get your business in harmony, the same thing will happen to you. Once you have a great foundation—and eBay will be able to help you with that—when you grow into better and bigger things in your life, that foundation is going to make you be able to move more quickly and easily. I hope today is the start of your transition, and that someday you too will find YOUR hover button.
