On Tuesday, October 02, 2007 I walked into Starbucks and saw a whole new merchandise change as well as music change.  As a 'crazy collector' I am always on the lookout for new merchandise or something I find to be unique or different to add to my collection.

This time, Starbucks and iTunes 'hooked up' and are releasing and promoting music.  They sell these plastic cards that are bigger than the size of a CD which have a hole at the top to hang and a code to download the complete album once the card has been paid for.  Many of these cards are full albums of the artist / song of the day listed below.  I would imagine that they will be selling the full album that corresponds with each of the cards as time goes on?  After all, they own the 'Hear Music' Label and have a CD rack in each store.

At this same time, they released a 'matching' Starbucks gift card to go with this Apple / iTunes / Starbucks / music promotion.  I must add that this card is the 1st card they have come out with which did not have the clear vertical 1/2" stripe down the right side of the card.  This one is a solid card, opaque, with a wood like grain pattern that runs through the card.  The card has a play button graphic as well as a 'to-go' coffee cup, headphones and a chair.  There is a sticker across the front which says "STARBUCKS / apple iTunes   Register this Card at xxx  By 12/31/07 and get 2 complimentary song downloads on iTunes.  PLEASE REMOVE THIS STICKER BEFORE USE."  These cards have a solid orange back and start with the 6040#.  SKU 325156.  The ones in my area had a solid silver pin coating on them.  There might be two pin coatings or different numbers as they often do in different areas. 


So, I went into Starbucks every day faithfully every day to get the 37 'Song of the Day' cards & save them in the order released as listed below.  I compiled this list for you.  After each date is the artist and then the song from that artist in which they offered the free download.

Like I mentioned before, each of these cards did offer the individual a free download of that song listed on the card and a photo of the artist on each card.  On the back of this plastic coated  paper card, there is a code made up of letters and numbers to make each card unique and able to be downloaded using this code. The sad part, I never got around to downloading these cards before they expired.   So, I simply ran around daily getting the cards so that I could save them and add them to my Starbucks card collection (even they are more paper than plastic). 

I had read somewhere that they were giving away like one million downloads.  I wonder how many of these cards were actually redeemed?  The download code on the back had an expiration date of  12/31/07.  Just some random questions that come to mind as I finish this article...How many got them all?  How many got part? How many were downloaded in the order they came out and made a CD or two out of them?  How many people ended up buying the full CD or downloaded the full music as a result of the sample song?
