Hello!! Thanks for your interest in this guide.
Our objective is to help those who just found a lot of star wars action figures in their closet and haven't quite figured out how to sell them, also helpful for newbies interested in getting started in this area and for expert collectors who want to sell a part of their collection.
You stumbled on a star wars action figure collection and you've heard you can put your kids through college selling these items on eBay. Unless they're boxed and in terrific condition, this is highly improbable. I'm sorry to disappoint you, however, you can still make a sweet deal out of this.
RESEARCH YOUR ITEMS
First thing is first you probably can't make much money if you don't know what you have on your hands. So I'm going to ask you to Google Wikipedia, free internet encyclopedia, open it on a new browser, select English language and search for "Kenner Star Wars Action Figures".
In return you'll be getting some information and the complete list of action figures sold by Kenner. This will help you get acquainted with:
- Character names
- Debut Package Card (The name of the collection they belong to)
- Debut year (Year released).
IDENTIFYING YOUR ITEMS
Now I know what you're thinking... and how will I know which is which? This is the easiest part, go to ebay and type the names and Released Years of each action figure. Almost no one sells one of these without a picture.
Make sure you check two or more listings to see what accessories go with each figure. Again, check two or more listings, remember people make mistakes, you don't want to repeat their mistakes and swap accessories between your action figures.
SORTING YOUR ITEMS OUT
I would recommend laying your items down on a table, ordering them sequentially with your Wikipedia List, this way you won't have to memorize the names of all the characters and collections to which they belong.
If you have two of the same kind you would probably use some sort or paper mark to label them with number 1,2,3...etc. This will help you when you list your items to identify correct pictures etc. You would want to use pictures that belong to each action figure in your listings to avoid problems with your customers.
IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT USE ANY SORT OF GLUED PAPERS DIRECTLY ON YOUR ITEMS, IT CAN DAMAGE THE ACTION FIGURE.
CLEANING YOUR ACTION FIGURES
You don't want to sell excessively soiled items, trust me. People don't buy them because they can hide unwanted marks such as scratches, or it might make them look less worthy of the price your asking for them.
- Get a deep bowl
- Fill it with hot, but not burning water, really hot water damages the action figures.
- Pour liquid hand soap (soft) into the bowl.
- Soak your items for 30 minutes. DO NOT SOAK GARMENTS OR STICKERS.
- Use a soft tooth brush to scrub them, it will take a few seconds to remove excessive dirt.
- Blow dry them with cool air.
Voilá They are ready for picture taking. You might want to wash garments, I do not recommend this because they can shrink, or experience many unwanted situations.
WHAT ARE THEY WORTH?
DON'T buy price guides. They are usually obsolete, instead go to Google. Search for REBELSCUM, this is a wonderful page, an actual authority on the Star Wars Collectibles. Open the page and click on the Wedge Collection, register and sign in. It's free.
You're going to see a left frame with a menu, click on View Toys. Select Action Figures. Select Vintage then Select BY CARD.
You already have the card information from the list retrieved from Wikipedia:
12-Back "Stawars" Wikipedia = SW 12-Back Rebelscum
20 Back "Star Wars" and 21 Back "Star Wars" Wikipedia = SW 2021 Back Rebelscum
For the rest use "The Empire Strikes Back" Wikipedia = Empire Rebelscum and so on.
For this example we're using Princess Leia Organa 1977 in Rebelscum SW 12-Back.
Scroll Down until you find your action Figure. Click on the l+ button besides the Collect button. This Adds the item to your collection. NOTE the l+ button adds a loose action figure the C+ adds a boxed or carded figure to your collection.
Go to the My Toys Collection Menu on the left side and click on it. Click on Action Figures, All Figures. Here you'll see your saved item. Click on Collect button to add details and calculate it's value. Place a "1" in the Loose Incomplete box if your item is incomplete or a "1" in the Loose Complete box if it's complete. Click on Save. (Incomplete means it's missing accessories).
Go to the left side menu and click again on All Figures to refresh the page. Now you'll be able to see what your item is really worth.
LISTING YOUR ITEM
To make an attractive listing I recommmend you to take as many pictures as possible. You can put this on hold for a while, so I can tell you what people want to know in the description and so you can add the corresponding pictures to your listing.
NOTE: Always include one standing picture with arms upfront. This will ensure the buyer the item can stand and that the joints are still tight enough. Do not post small or pictures taken from far away... these are not trusted, can be interpreted as a scam.
An interesting Aid is Auctiva, search it on google. These guys let you upload up to 24 pictures to your listing without billing you for image hosting or the gallery, ebay won't bill you either. It's perfectly compatible too. They have much more features you might want to check out.
ITEM TITLE:
Use the action figure's full name, the year released, don't forget to put either star wars or sw. If there is space left you can type any keywords you think might help on the search engine. Don't waste space saying something like rare... nothing on ebay is rare or hard to find, instead you can say Authentic or Original or Vintage. This will give you better results.
Check for misspelling here, this is critical for the item to sell in a good price!!!
ITEM FORMAT
This is really up to your preferences. Anything will do good, auctions work, buy it now works, best offer works, reserve works...
