James J. Hill House

For those of you who have an interest and appreciation for architecture and history, the St. Paul area near and along Summit Ave is a must.  Summit Avenue is considered the longest intact example of a Victorian neighborhood in the country.  The cornerstone of the area is the James J. Hill house.  A variety of tours are available throughout the year.  Walking tours as well as the Summit Hill Home Tour are some.

Cathedral of St. Paul

Across the street from the James J. Hill home is the Cathedral of St. Paul, which was modeled after Saint Peter's in Rome.   The Cathedral is located at the in the intersection of Summit and Selby.  The Cathedral's dome rises over 306 feet from the floor to the tip of its cross.

The Neighborhood

As you drive the neighborhood, you will be priviledged to view many beautiful homes of varying history. This beautiful sweeping parkway is where F. Scott Fitgerald lived and wrote. If you are able to take advantage of the Summit Hill Home Tour, approximately 20 homes will be open for you to walk through.  Staff and volunteers are at each home and will assist you with any questions you have.  Parking is limited and some walking is required but is well worth it.  For those with walking concerns, a trolley system is available at no charge.  It is recommended a person be familair with the trolley routing and stops prior to the day of the tour.  The ticket purchased for the Summit Hill Home Tour, will provide many pages of information to assist you in your day.  The ticket itself is a booklet with information about each home, a map of the homes, the trolley route, and the restricted parking locations.

Classic Cars

To compliment the Summit Hill Home Tour, classic cars are parked outside each home toured.  Other similar classics can be seen driving around the neighborhood as well.  This is a perfect compliment to the tour.  Any automotive enthuisiast will enjoy these tremendously.
