You know how Ebay places other items on front of you, items which somehow appear to relate to those you have looked at before, or in the case of a Seller, even items that appear similar to those you offer for sale yourself.
Well, I sell several items with "Spun Glass" components or items made more or less of "Spun Glass". So now I am looking at other listings for items supposedly made of spun glass. Surprise, surprise, that either other Sellers are falsifying their components as spun glass when they are not, or they simply do not understand what "real Spun Glass" actually is.
So briefly, for all who wish to know - and that should include people selling their pieces with such identity - here is a definition of "Spun Glass".
Thin threads of glass are generated by heating and thinning down glass rod, which is a common starting raw material for glass artisans. Such thread might vary in thickness, but generally would compare to knitting wool. Now we have the starting component for "Spun Glass". Using these threads and splicing them together, or fastening them to other things - such as making halyards on a ship or masts with lines dangling from them - does not qualify as "Spun Glass".
Technically the expression can be applied to the thin thread material, as these threads are produced from rod in a spinning fashion. However, and this is the vital point, both artistically and commercially, "Spun Glass" is only the product that is generated from such thin glass thread. And such production is to be by hand, heating the thin thread, and then knitting, crocheting, weaving it into intricate shapes, such shapes to resemble glass mesh that is draped or shaped into complicated forms or images.
Study our Sailing Ship or Dinner Bell as just 2 examples of what is known in the glass world as "Spun Glass". And be mindful of this when looking at listings that are deceptive in this respect.
