Are you contemplating your first triathlon? For beginning athletes, the first triathlon is usually the sprint distance triathlon. The sprint distance triathlon is an ideal starting place – the format is more flexible than the longer offerings. Sprint triathlons will often have a beginner’s wave – easing that first journey through open water.
You will find training plans in books and online of various lengths. I recommend a 12 week training plan for someone preparing for their first sprint. This is a long enough plan to reinforce the increased activity level as a new habit. It’s also not too short – which would hinder your results and increase the risk of injury.
A word of caution: triathlons are addictive. What other sport allows you the adult equivalent of “going out to play”? My childhood was filled with biking until the streetlights came on, swimming every chance I got, and racing my classmates during recess. Instead of looking at this sprint triathlon as a fitness task, look at it as the opportunity to go out and play. Don’t get stuck in the trap of just counting up mileage – instead, rediscover the fun you had in your childhood. In the process, discover a healthier and more active you.

- In order to prepare appropriately, you should choose a training plan that includes:
- 2 swims per week, gradually increasing in length and/or intensity
- 2 runs per week, gradually increasing in length and/or intensity
- 2 bikes per week, gradually increasing in length and/or intensity
- An easier training week every 4-5 weeks, to allow your body to recover
- Core body exercises that can be done at home – twice a week
- One day of absolute rest (no core, bike, swim, or running) per week
- Nutritional recommendations
- A credentialed author – what is the basis of their recommendations.
