Ready for your first fencing lesson? What equipment will you need?
A fencing school, sometimes referred to as a salle d'armes, will often have equipment available to lend out. But the serious student will eventually wish to acquire his/her own stuff.
Why do you need your own stuff?
Your very own fencing apparel will 1) fit better - and therefore be more safe - and 2) be somewhat more hygienic than sharing with sallemates.
Having your own sword allows you to train at home by yourself, or with a friend. You can become more familiar with the weapon, and make it truly your own.
What will you need?
1) Mask. Protects your face.
2) Jacket. Protects your body.
3) Glove. Protects your sword hand.
(You could even use non-fencing gloves and save a little $$, if they cover your wrist & forearm).
4) Weapon. Foil, Epee, or Saber - depending on which you are learning. Ask your teacher to find out.
5) [optional] Plastron. Some salles may additionally require a plastron, which goes under your jacket for added protection and comfort.
How much will all this cost?
Depends on the vendor, sizing, and the quality.
Expect to pay around:
$40-75 Mask
$40-75 Jacket
$10-20 Glove
$20-60 Weapon
In total: $110 - $200. (USD)
There are other items that you will need for competition - to be covered in another guide.
Most importantly: Bring a good attitude.
Use common sense & be respectful of your teacher, training partners, and the weapons. And stretch/warm up properly before fencing.
