SPINEL
Custom jewelers and collectors who like unusual gems appreciate spinel. It’s available in a variety of colors.
RED SPINEL : Red is the most valued spinel color. The best red spinels resemble a high-quality ruby and usually com from Myanmar. High-quality red spinels can retail for over $2500 per carat. Low-quality brownish stones are available for under $100 a carat. Prices fro stones above 10 carats are negotiable.
PINK SPINEL : This often sells for about one- third to one- half the rice of red spinel. The lighter the color the lower the price.
ORANGE SPINEL : Its color ranges from yellow-orange to red-orange. This spinel is sometimes called flame spinel
BLUE SPINEL : Fine blue colors are rare and can retail for over $2000 per carat. This spinel tends to be grayish or dark. In an attempt to lighten the color, stones are often cut shallow.
Care Tips : Spinel can be cleaned in ultrasonics, steamers and warm soapy water. Its color is stable to light, but some light colored stones may fade under intense heat. It doesn’t react to chemicals. Overall, spinel is durable, comparatively hard and typically has a better clarity and brilliance than a ruby.
