A term used to designate a gem family. Quartz is a species that has varieties called rose quartz, amethyst, citrine, smoky quartz, praseolite, aventurine, chalcedony, jasper, and so on; beryl is a species that has varieties called emerald, aquamarine, heliodore, morganite and so on.
