I've been visiting Southern Maine for the last 12 years, vacationing there each summer, generally in the region of Cape Neddick, Kennebunk, Ogunquit, Wells, and York. In that time, I stayed at a lot of bed and breakfasts, hotels, inns, lodges, and motels.
Over the last two or three years, I've stayed several times at a beautiful and unique bed and breakfast in Cape Neddick (just outside Ogunquit) called The Beauport Inn on Clay Hill. It's owned by a "retired" couple - Cathy and George Wilson - who are the most gracious and welcoming hosts I have ever known in a B&B.
The Beauport Inn was newly constructed about five years ago, perhaps less, to look like an English Manor house. Its construction was meticulous and the sensation that you have stepped back in time is only enhanced when you enter the inn. Inside you will find relics from around the world, brass and copper from Turkey, wooden paneling from old English schoolhouses, carpets from around the world and much more.
And it's romantic. With only four (4) rooms, you're not likely to run into crowds and it's very easy to have a private getaway with someone near and dear. All the rooms have private baths and the hosts have equipped the inn with a steam room outfitted with Turkish doors, a jacuzzi and a beautiful pool.
If that't not enough, you will enjoy a full and hearty breakfast cooked by George each morning of your stay. But don't worry - those of you watching your weight can request the "Healthy Choice" a wonderful blend of yogurt and fresh fruit topped with homemade granola.
