Phenomenal success with fan clubs and message boards dedicated to this Model
.Its fame and success are no accident; it is a real pleasure to own this model.
It is powered by a Pentium M Centrino running at 1000 MHz, modest by today's standard
But compared with its siblings and rivals like the Sony Picture Book or the Fujitsu Lifebook P
1120 It is a quantum leap. It boasts an 802.11 B wireless Lan  (more on this subject down below)
512 MB SDRAM MicroDimm with easy access from the bottom to 1 free slot for upgrade.
I cannot stress enough the need for an upgrade to 1GB, the difference in speed is
Very noticeable. (Sony MicroDimm on eBay are around 60/80$ for 512MB).
The display is brilliant and sharp, the screen is 10.6  in.  wide and has a built in magnifying utility.
The mini hard drive is 40 GB and is tucked underneath the left side of the Palm Rest. Hard to
Access, these mini HDD are hard to come by, costly and the capacity is still hovering around 40/60
GB.
The DVD/CDRW combo drive can be replaced by a DVD burner with the UJ855 mini slim line,
Although costly if you need one, you can get one.
The wireless Mini PCI card originally is an Intel ProSet 2100, it is situated under the
CD ROM drive on the right part of the Palm Rest. To access it you need to
Remove the upper portion of the base, remove 2 screws holding the drive and lift it
Without disconnecting it. I upgraded my wireless card to an Atheros 108 MBPS,
Works fantastic, I may not have a Centrino Technology anymore but I have a wider wireless
Range and faster broadband capability.
The font engraved on the keyboard is a little uncommon, removing the keyboard is done
By removing 2 screws and disengaging 2 clips situated underneath the battery, I should say
Above it when it is upright.
The real drawback is the sketchy Motion Eye Cmos Camera, 9 out of 10 are not working any
Longer and there is no easy fix; the integrated microphone will still work after the camera dies
And the sound buttons on the right side of the display are very convenient.
As for the computing power it is more than you bargain for although the machine is slow to boot
up and is a little overheating; by summer time it is irritating in the south but not alarming...
The cooling fan is so silent but for the stream of heat coming from the vents on the left
Side you'll think it is not there.
The battery life is decent; it runs about 3 hrs with the wireless on and off and the screen dimmed.
If you need a battery with the longer life there is one out there.
The shipping software includes Sony Usual suspects like DVGate Sonic Stage,  MS Word and Windows XP.
