Having used the excellent but small Sony MZ-R30 for radio reporting before moving 'up' to the professional Marantz machine, I have been generally impressed with the Marantz but disappointed in its ability to perform simple edits. This is not to diminish the quality and performance of this machine which has lots of useful features. But the MZ-R30 wins hands down with regard to editing. While its buttons are very small the Sony is simple, extremely quick to use and writing the Table of Contents is almost instantaneous. This is where the Marantz falls down. It takes so long to complete the task that I soon resorted to carrying the tiny MZ-R30 in my bag and and used it for any necessary topping and tailing of recordings.
The Marantz also has an internal electret microphone which is less than useless due to the fact that it picks up lots of internal noise from the body of the machine.
Another disappointment with the Marantz is its LCD display which lacks contrast, is unclear and difficult to read while recording.
For a machine which is not cheap - close to £1,000 - I think Marantz could have improved these issues before producing what is otherwise an impressive tool.
Overall the Marantz is the best machine for regular field reporting while the size of the Sony makes it more fiddly. But it wasn't intended for the same market as the Marantz. It's just a pity that Marantz couldn't have copied Sony in its editing capabilities.
