Song Of The South has NEVER been officially released on DVD.
Song Of The South has NOT been banned, Disney have merely withheld it from the public.
The only OFFICIAL releases are PAL format videos from Europe/UK, a Japanese laserdisc and a Hong Kong laserdisc.
Song Of The South was withdrawn worldwide in December 2001.
The movie is set AFTER the Civil War.
Will Song Of The South ever be re-released? Most probably. The film becomes public domain in 2039, and doubtless Disney will release it before then so as not to lose copyright.
Bill Cosby does NOT own the rights to Song Of The South!
The UK PAL video version is NOT cut. Although it only has a run time of 91 minutes, this is due to the British PAL VHS system running 4% faster and known as "PAL Speedup." During the course of the movie, the change in speed is not noticeable, and the approx. 94 minute duration of the film is maintained.
Why do a lot of the official UK Song Of The South videos look different? Because Song Of The South remained on catalogue in the UK for quite a while. The very first UK release is extremely scarce, and came in a white plastic case with a paper liner that replicated the familiar artwork on the first USA Soundtrack LP. All later issues had moreorless the same design paper liner, which is the one most commonly seen on online auctions. This remained constant, although with minor font etc. changes. The video cassette label has at least four variants, and even these have slight differences. Most have a yellow label, some have a blue/purple label. Perhaps the most desirable UK issue is the one issued just before the movie was withdrawn. Unlike all other issues, this has a moulded dark blue clamshell case, and is altogether a more luxuriously produced item, with richer colours in the paper liner. From personal experience I would say these issues are outnumbered at least 20 to 1 by the more common plain case issues. All these special clamshell issues I have seen have had the blue/purple video cassette label.
The UK/Europe PAL system is not the same as the USA NTSC system. You will need a multi-format video player to play the European version, otherwise you will just get "snow" on playback. Failing this you will have to search for a service to have the tape transferred to the USA NTSC format (supposedly this is legal as long as you own the PAL original).
PAL is not an acronym for Picture Always Lousy, and NTSC is not an acronym for Never The Same Colour (Twice)!!!
