I believe hats make the man (or woman). I started getting interested in hats several years ago, when I noticed a gentleman at work wearing a fedora. When I asked where he got his hat, he directed me to the Hatterie in Akron, OH. A small store born out of the early 1900's, it has remained a family run business, handed down from generation to generation. I was amazed by the variety of caps and hats in the store and I felt as if I had stepped back into time. Hats of all types and sizes and colors for men and women adorned the walls and shelves. Since I had no idea what my hat size was, Dan Kelly, the store owner let me try on several hats and caps to determine my size as well as style that best fit my head and face. I prefer the Fur Felt Fedora in the "Bogart" or "C" Crown style and for a more casual look, the Kangol Ivy "504" Wool cap. Spring time draws me to the Hatterie to peruse the selection of straw panama fedoras and Kangol Ventair caps. I recommend visiting a local hat shop before making a big hat purchase so that you know your hat size, explore your options in brands, feel the type of different materials (Wool Felt, wool/fur felt, fur felt). Once you have an idea of these things, it is easier to picture what a hat will look like with your Sunday best or with your casual clothes. You will also bid with confidence knowing the hat is something you need and will be better prepared to ask the right questions about the hat.
Next time you're passing through Akron, Ohio, stop in and visit the Hatterie at 1938 Bucholzer Ave. Akron, OH 44310 330-633-7475. Just tell Dan the oldman sent you.
