Here are just a few tips and tricks that I have learned along the way that helped me get where I am today. Whether you are just getting started selling , or you are a seller looking to step things up a bit, this guide can hopefully help you in some way.
- Find something you like to sell! Dont sell things you dont like, youll have a hard time describing them and may find yourself unable to answer questions about the item from potential buyers. You need to find your niche.
- Clean out your closets, your attic, basement, find things around the house you no longer have a use for. Get those items listed on ebay and get yourself a reputation as a seller.
- Ask relatives, friends, and neighbors if they have anything to get rid of. Tell them youll take that bag of clothes they have and turn it into cash and let them know up front how much percentage you will take for your time. Youll be surprised at the amount of people who will come out of the woodwork to get their "clutter" out of their basements and green into their wallets.
- Advertise that you sell on ebay! Use the newspaper, email, work bulletin, school bulletin.. Get your name out there and let them know up front what percentage you will be keeping.
- Buy small, inexpensive things that you need anyway from other ebayers to build up your feedback. And once you are established, its usually recommended to create another user ID and use the second one strictly for buying.
- Look for sellers selling "lots" on ebay, things in bulk. Some people are just trying to get rid of the items and you can turn around and sell them piece by piece.
- Google is your friend! USE IT. Search. Search some more. You could find wholesalers this way, but be very careful as most of them are a scam! There are very few legit wholesalers, but they do exist.
- Hit up all your local thrift stores. There are probably a ton in your city. This is where that google business will come in handy. You can find lots and lots of treasures there, if you know what to look for. Hang out on the discussion boards on ebay to find out what brands are popular and what items are rare and worth a lot. Each discussion board has different experts and youll find a LOT of helpful info there if you just take the time.
- Go to flea markets, swap meets, estate sales (be early!), garage sales, consignment shops, yard sales, closeouts at department stores, major sales. Know when the sales are. In my opinion, some of the most profitable items will be found at estate sales. This again , is where youre researching will come in handy.
- Dont listen to those get rich quick on ebay scams you hear on the radio and on tv. Ebay is HARD work. Nobody is going to tell you where they get their items. It takes hard work, and a lot of dedication.
- Use the search completed auction feature to find out how much items are selling for. When you are searching, click on "advanced" and then you can check off "search completed auctions only" The numbers in green are what they are selling for.
- Check out sellers who seem to be popular and have lots of bids and interest in their items. These people will have auctions that do very well all the time. Check out their listings, and see what they are doing right.
- Good descriptions. Describe your item well enough that you wouldnt need pictures, and take pictures well enough that you wont need any descriptions. Use a clean, easy to read template and keep your rules and info down to a minimum. Buyers spend and average of 20 seconds or so looking at your item, too many words will scare them away. Music, and moving things on your auction page will cause people to hit backspace faster than youd ever imagine. Big , big turnoff.
- If you are selling clothing , make sure you launder the item and take all measurements.
- Good customer service is a MAJOR must have. You will have to field complaints. If you treat your customers the way you would like to be treated, they will be much easier to deal with and more likely to come to a resolution with you. You would be surprised how far good customer service can get you. Lots of buyers like to find someone they can trust and know that person will treat them well so they are likely to buy from you over and over if they are satisfied with how they were handled
- Dont use unnecessary words and characters in your title. Buyers dont search for * ~ L00K hot. Think about how your item is being searched for. Make sure to include the size in the title if its a clothing item. Make good use of your title! Dont take up space in it by using characters that dont help get people to your item.
- Check your auctions often after you submit it just to be sure you havent made any mistakes. If you find a mistake , revise your item immediately.
- Ship FAST. Try to ship the same day payment is made, or the very next day if possible. Customers really appreciate fast shipping. Make use of the carrier pick up service which is free if you ship something priority. Also, many post offices are open late or have self service lobbies which are extremely helpful.
- Dont shut out international buyers! Most of the time, they are willing to pay more for your item than your regular US customer because things are harder to find at a good price in their country. Make your listing attractive for them, offer reasonable shipping. Lots of international buyers use eBay US. Shipping internationally is not as hard as you think it is. Its very easy and simple
.
- Get yourself a good scale so you can print your postage online. Doing so will save you a lot of time and money. I recommend Oldwillknot to buy postage scales from.
