I have noticed several auction listings here on eBay for the new 2007 Presidential Dollar "Upside down Error". As with any error coin, unless this is your particular area of collecting or selling, please do some research before purchasing any so-called error coin. It could save you from throwing your money away. Coin collecting should be a fun experience, and coin dealers have an obligation to treat buyers right in order to insure the continued growth of new collectors. It only makes good business sense, right?
Ok, with that said....there are listings here that claim to be selling Mint error 2007 Presidential Dollars. They further claim that the "error" in question is that the lettering on the edge of the coin is "upside down". As a dealer I owe it to myself and most of all, my customers, to keep up with the latest information possible regarding U.S. coins. In the February 12th 2007 issue of Coin World there is a front page story which says in part:
The incluse edge lettering on the Presidential dollars will vary position in orientation to the obverse and reverse depending on how the struck coin is sent through the edge lettering device. The edge lettering is the last process the coin goes through, and quite frankly they could go in the device with either the obverse or reverse side up. What this means folks is that it is NOT a Mint error. They simply are being stamped as they lay.
Now, I am not saying that any of the sellers in those listings are trying to cheat you. I am not saying they are lying to you. I am saying however, that they may just be oblivious to this fact, and it could be an honest mistake.
Thank you for your time, and I hope this helps you put your collecting dollars towards something substantial. Now get out there and buy coins!
