Most snuff bottles sold today are new . Still being made in China today. There is a very good dealer in Ann Arbor Michigan

a search of the internet should find this dealer. Most of his bottles for sale are in the Thousands of dollars range. The thing to remember is that he more afflueent in China are collecting Snff Bottles and the dealer I mentioned sells to China himself as there are very few original antques not already in collections even in China.

If the bottle is under $200.00 you can be sure it is a modern bottle. I have examples of  a double snuff bottle I bought from China for 1.00 with large shipping fees and another bottle from Ireland both were porcelan over copper and looked old however the neat Chineese characters on the bottom were identical the bottle from Ireland seemed more legitimate it was purchased for $35.00 but only worth $1.00. I do not know if that earlier. even knew the item was a reproduction. The other bottle was sold as a 1800 original . Ebay should monitor this area more carefully.

I have other bottles that are not antigue that went for about $25.00 but are really nice hand carved  stone (jade) snuff bottles probably also from modern China but these are worth considering as they have a great deal of workmanship involved. Usually these will appear without false claims as to authenticity but will appear in an online auction from a dealer. Be wary of a dealer that has an unlimited supply of  these type items as all antiques are being reproduced in China that have been made to simulate aging. Also be aware of the phrase from estate sale .Very rare the heirs wont know the value of a prized snuff bottle. Good refernce books are available but are not cheap. Also a trip to a good dealer or a museum collection is worth the trip to see true antiques But many Reproductions look very good. This is one area where a certificate of authenticity is a must and not one run off on the sellers printer.
