Snow plowing is a tough business to be in, and no contractor can afford a breakdown. To avoid costly and time consuming events, here are a few preventative maintenance tasks that you can take.
- Annual Fluid Changes
Just like your truck, your plow pump needs it's oil and filter changed. Not only can the oil wear out, but water can get mixed in with the oil, acceleration corrosion, and eventually rendering your pump useless. In addition to changing the oil in your pump annually, you should also flush your power angle cylinders.
- Proper Summer Storage Techniques
When you are ready to store your plow setup for the summer, you should give your equipment a very thourough inspection, ensuring that you did not break any parts during the winter. It is much better to have plenty of time to make repairs and order parts, than to be in a rush right before a snow storm. Also, dont forget that if you have any exposed hydraulic cylinders, that they should be coated with a light coat of grease so they dont get rusty, which could lead to leaks. Make sure that you plug any hydraulic fittings that are exposed. If your plow is going to be stored outside, dont forget to cover it with a good UV Resistant tarp.
- Prevent malfunctions and leaks on older pumps and cylinders
O-Rings and Seals wear out after time, especially if the oil has not been changed in the pump and cylinders. Have your pump rebuilt, and have your cylinders repacked if they are showing any signs of wear. Rebuilding your pump restores it to factory settings, and generally has a new starter motor, electronic coils, and all seals are replaced. These rebuilt pumps are generally ready to use right out of the box.
- Carry spare parts
Make sure that you carry a spare parts kit for your plow model. Also, keep a set of basic tools with you. At the very least, carry a hammer, pliers, adjustable wrench, test light, and a troubleshooting guide for your plow.
