With well over 10,000 slot car items listed on Ebay at any given time, this is a great place to start or build any slot car collection. As a seasoned slot car collecting veteran, I found Ebay particularly great for finding the rare slot cars.
For a brief slot car lesson, these are electric motorized cars that run in a groove on a track. Similar to the way a toy train runs on rails. Slot cars can also be trucks, motorcycles, snowmobiles and whatever else you can hit the road with today!! Slot cars were extremely popular in the 1960's. Hobby shops all across the country and abroad were building commercial race tracks for their customers to come race on.
When doing a slot car search you can be particular about scale(1/24, 1/25, 1/48, 1/32 and HO). 1/32 and HO scales are the most popular. You can set up a good size race track in a smaller space with these scales. You may also do a search by the manufacturer including Aurora, Tyco, Cox, Carrera, Fly, Eldon, Strombecker, Scalextric, Monogram, Revell, Russkit, K&B and many more.
There are many different aspects to this hobby. Of course there are racing and collecting, but there is also building and race tuning your cars. You can also design your own race course. Start a local club with friends. You could race RTR cars which are factory assembled ready to run cars. But, if you are an avid modeler you can attempt a KIT, which is a factory packaged set of parts to build a complete car. Which ever way you decide to go, this hobby has lots going for it.
Being in this hobby for over 30 years I have found it more difficult to find these cars at flee markets and yard sales. As time goes on, more collectors are holding on to their special slot car pieces and making it harder to find them, thus bringing values up. As with buying any kind of collectible, always be aware of it's condition. Especially if it is used. Most Ebay sellers are honest and accurate with there descriptions. Ebay is a great mainstay in adding to my collection!
With the price of gas, I wouldn't go anywhere else but Ebay!!!
