How to add Skype to your entire home using standard telephones

Entry Level Solution

The 'entry' level solution for installing Skype service in your entire home utilizes your existing regular telephones. This solution only requires the purchase of a Skype based VoIP Phone adapter and a wireless telephone jack system. The installation process is quite simple and straightforward.

There are only two requirements in order to have Skype working in your entire house using standard non-skype phones. First, you need to transfer the Skype calls coming in through the computer to your regular phone. Second, you need to be able to have all phones (or as many as you would like) be able to pick up the Skype call.

For the first requirement, a Skype VoIP Phone Adapter (like our Yealink B2K unit) accomplishes the transfer of calls to your regular phone line. Skype voice call requests are sent from the computer to the VoIP Phone Adapter through a USB connection. Then the VoIP Phone Adapter transfers the call over a regular phone line -- which causes a regular phone to ring normally.

The second requirement is a wireless phone jack transmitter that is connected to the VoIP Phone Adapter with a standard phone line. The wireless phone jack transmitter sends an FM signal throughout the entire house. The FM signal is picked-up by the wireless phone extensions (purchase as many as you need) thereby causing all phones connected to the extension jacks to ring. That is it, you are now able to process Skype calls all over your house!

If you want to conference Skype calls with calls made on a "landline," all that is needed is a 2-line phone.

You only have a 1-line phone? No problem. Press “* ” on the phone keypad and you can switch between Skype and regular line calls -- one type (regular or Skype) of call at a time.

Materials needed to complete this project:

  • Computer and high-speed internet service
  •  Skype Internet VoIP Phone Adapter
  • A wireless phone jack package, including one transmit/receive unit plus extensions
  • Standard telephones

Benefits of using standard phones:

  • No additional cost in purchasing a new phone system
  • Easy to install and expandable

Drawbacks of using standard phones:

  • FM Wireless Jack system, though beyond acceptable, will provide the lowest quality sound of all our solutions
  • Skype user database will not be available or updated on regular phones
  • Have to setup speed dial (#NUMBER) for each of your contacts
