Sizes of Large Envelopes per USPS
In 2007, the USPS began to charge rates based on the size of the envelope being used. In 2008, they updated this to include international mail also. Items under 11.5 by 6.125 by 0.25 inches are still at letter rates. But once any one of these dimensions is surpassed, a large envelope rate is charged. There also is a maximum size on large envelopes and if any dimension is surpassed, then the package rate is charged. That size is 15 by 12 by 0.75 inches.
These large envelopes are also called flats by the USPS. Postage is 26 cents more than first class letter rate for international and 40 cents more for domestic. This size is very common to many dealers so be aware in advance that it exists.
