My name is Christopher A. Crayton. I am a best selling computer book
author, college professor of the year, professional technical reviewer,
CompTIA A+ Technician and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.
I amazed that a simple guide to protecting your own pc has not been
written for the average person. "Dummies" don't usually use computers!
So here goes. This is the ultimate simple protection guide for Average
People who use Microsoft Windows.
The following computer advice is dedicated to my Mom who finally took
the time to actually learn how to use a mouse.
If you use the following advice, you will save yourself many headaches,
hours or even days of time and the satisfaction of actually doing
something productive with that metal or plastic asset that is even more
important than your television set.
1. Get a router. Better yet, get a Linksys router and use encryption.
This provides a HARDWARE firewall that hides your IP address (the number
that identifies your computer to the world) from people who want your
computer dead.  This is very easy to do if you simply read the
instructions provided with the router. My Mom can even do this!
2. Update your computer with all current Microsoft updates. If you are a
crook and are using a bootleg copy of Windows XP, you may not want to
choose the Authentication Windows update. It will remind you that you
are a crook every time you start Windows. My mom chose to be legal and
use this update. Oh yeah, Click Start then Windows Update (It has a
globe with a flag on the top).
3. Install, Update, and Run NORTON INTERNET SECURITY WITH ANTIVIRUS.
Keep your NORTON INTERNET SECURITY WITH ANTIVIRUS updated and running
all of the time. Install it and take five minutes to read the
instructions. It will even protect your Outlook or Outlook Express email
well. And, it has an awesome EMAIL SPAM FILTER (filters out unwanted
incoming crap from people who want to sell you Viagra, Drugs, and other
things you shouldn't have or be doing.)
4. Install, Update and Run Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition. This is a free
add and cookie crap removal tool. IT IS THE BEST AND IT IS FREE! Run it
once a week and remove whatever it finds. It is awesome software and
knows what it is doing.
5. Install, Update, and Run SPYWARE BLASTER from Javacool. This is top
rated plug the holes in your computer software and IT IS FREE!

PS. My mom did all of this stuff and still lost her computer to TROJAN
HORSE! She has since purchased an APPLE MAC and has no problems
whatsoever. She hates me now and has taken me out of the family will.
