I collect, buy, sell and trade mugs. Old ones, new ones, sets, and singles. It's so discouraging to find a great porcelain piece that has silver marks made by eating utinsils or rubbing against a metal object in the dish washer.
I've tried lots of products to remove these marks but had not been able to find any cleanser or solvent that will get them out. However, for small or fine marks I've found an easy and simple solution.
By using a very fine grain Emery board many of these marks can be removed. You must be very cautious though because you don't want to mar the shine or artwork! If you can find a narrow Emery board that is flexible that works best.
Try this method on a junk mug first so you can see the results. Gently rub in a circular motion just contacting the mark area. Wipe with a dry paper towel and look to make sure you haven't dulled the finish. Continue till the mark is gone. You can apply a little bit of water to the tip of the Emery board if it isn't made of paper or cardboard. Trial and error will show you how to get the best results.
Hope this information will help you restore some of your collectible mugs and dishes to their original beauty!
