I recently purchased another coin silver cased pocket watch, a six size Elgin. Lucky for me that I bought it relatively cheap, because it had been polished some time back with LIQUID POLISH! No big deal you say, well it really is a big deal, the case took a lot of work to make it all one color of silver again, the outside was a slam dunk, the inside of the back of the case was four different colors of black, the dust cover, was the same. This is a Hunter case and has a back, an inner, or dust cover, a bezel, (this is what holds the crystal, and of course a cover over the face and bezel. Now to the real problem, it took me hours to remove the rust from the movement, and the winding stem, screws, and the lever set lever! I work with a great 83 year old watchmaker a few hours six days a week. He guides me in repairs, and laughs at me when I spend the time restoring old watches. The reason he laughs is that I can make a few dollars an hour doing cleaning, and oiling jobs. The rub here is that when I do a restoration, I am lucky to make a dollar an hour at times. Understand that I work in a shop that has all the tools and machinery to perform almost any job that needs to be done. So, beware of silver watches that show multi-colors, you are asking for trouble when you buy one, unless you are equipped to repair the damage done by any LIQUID CLEANER! Polishing should be done with a good machine polishing setup, or a soft cloth especially made for polishing gold and silver which you can buy at a jewelry supply house. Thank you for checking this guide and good hunting on ebay. Robert.
