Should you make your own subliminal self change programs? There are a lot of people who would like you to think that it is a good idea. Making a subliminal audio program is not very difficult to do. But making it so that it is safe and effective is another matter entirely.

Consider this: In order to make a subliminal program that works, you have to have a good understanding of the difference between the conscious and subconscious minds, and how they work. You also have to understand the possible side effects of improperly phrasing a suggestion. In this field, a bad choice of words is going to cause problems. You may end up with unintended side effects that are worse than the original problem you were trying to fix!

I can hear it now - someone is thinking, "Ah, but I don't need to write my own subliminal scripts - I'll just go find someone else's on the Internet!"

Sure, you could do that. But guess what? Just because it's out there doesn't mean the author was any more knowledgeable than you. What's worse, if you don't know how to properly phrase subliminal suggestions, and they make a mistake in their wording, you're going to get the same results as if you wrote it yourself. And while there are a lot of sites with freely downloadable scripts, even popular hypnosis sites, there are still enough phrasing errors in the scripts available that I, as creator of my own line of subliminal CDs, refuse to ever use someone else's script.

Furthermore, a lot of the scripts you can download (or get free with some programs) are not only riddled with phrasing problems, they don't adequately address the problem! Have you ever seen some of these scripts for weight loss that are five or six statements? There are at least sixteen reasons why someone could be overweight! And worse, sometimes you'll see scripts that have virtually nothing to do with achieving the stated goals! But if you don't know how the subconscious mind works, how are you going to know whether the script will, or even could, have the desired effects?

Building your own subliminals also isn't easy to do properly for other reasons. If you're going to use a recording of the ocean to cover your speech, for instance, you'll need a vocoder in order to make sure the subconscious can hear everything. The sound of the ocean varies considerably in volume. In order to keep the speech hidden at the quietest points, you may end up exceeding the lower limit of volume your subconscious can hear. Vocoding corrects this by adjusting the volume of the subliminal messages to remain a constant volume in comparison to the covering sounds. Vocoding is also time consuming and expensive. A decent hardware vocoder will run you a few hundred dollars (for one that connects only to cassette tape decks!) and up. They can run into the several thousands of dollars. Software vocoders come in two varieties - worthless, and expensive. The worthless variety can be had for under a hundred dollars. They attempt to use real time volume adjustments to match the volume of the masking sounds, but fail to adjust volumes fast enough. The result is sudden spikes of volume in the speech that become quite audible (and annoying). The expensive ones are tricky to use and require a lot of time to do their work, but they do a very good job - provided you understand the complexities of how to adjust all the intricate settings properly. For these reasons, quality vocoding is only found in the high quality masked subliminals, such as my own; and it makes a big difference in the effectiveness of the final product.

Finally, low cost software programs designed to make subliminals may also have bugs in them which can cause problems.

It is really worth your while to purchase subliminals from someone who has taken the time to learn the ins and outs of it. If you insist on making your own, do yourself a favor and spend a lot of time reading everything you can get your hands on about hypnosis, subliminals and the subconscious mind. It takes a long time to understand everything well enough to be able to safely make subliminal programming. But if you really love it, as I do, you'll be willing to put in the effort. Or, you can just find a reputable producer of subliminals and buy from them. But when you consider the risks involved in making your own without enough knowledge of the subject, that really inexpensive "Make your own" product might not be such a good idea after all.
