This is a independent guide to help you deside if now is the right time to part with all that hard cash to buy a new LCD Tv. Or wait for the lastest round of changes in spec.

To understand this story, I will take you back to the first time I became interested in consumer electronics.
It was the early 1980’s and I was running a second hand car showroom in Essex (yes.. I know the reputation). The electronics we take for granted in our homes now were only a very distant dream. This was the time, that only the lucky few had a stereo TV, the change over from old wooden Tv sets to the new sleeker grey ones was just happening. The battle between VHS video recorders and Betamax had just begun in that new fangled market where even the cheapest “piano key” machine cost over £300.

The latest technology in 1980

I remember a BBC TV Series that began this whole road for me. It was called “the digital village”. It was an experiment that took a whole village and gave them a taste of the future… At the time it was envisaged, we have more than the 4 channels we had the time. It envisaged a time where the lucky few could have as many as 20 pay Tv channels!! :-) and our TV Sets would be the latest state of the art cathode ray tubes (CRT) with even the privileged being able to afford Widescreen versions!!

The future of TV in the 1980’s

But still the show was enough to get me excited and I started to work in the industry. Now having owned a string of shops. And having worked with top level at all the major retail brands within this country. And having seen many many changes. I have a greater understanding of the industry I work in..
I have seen Televisions change from 4:3 to 16:9 (Widescreen). I have seen them change from wooden sets to the matt black design, I have seen them change  to the silver and to now the latest gloss black. I have seen them change from cathode ray tubes (CRT) to Plasma TV’s

Plasma was hailed as the future of TV

Then came the change to LCD TVs… To HD ready to now the HD 1080i … and to the coming changes from the 1080i HD to the 24p HD TV…

LCD TV's  have under gone many changes

And indeed a coming changein the not too distant future is a shift away from LCD TV’s and a change to the new OLED TV’s (Organic light-emitting diode TVs). which are waffer thin screens, that produce 3 times the contrast ratios of LCD's

Is Organic light emitting diode sets the way of the future?

But the one thing it has taught me is that change happens every year within the industry.. It is the electronics industry’s way of boosting sales. To make us all change to the latest high tech equipment, and more importantly make us spend our hard earned cash.
So what ever the year you can rest assured there are some big changes happening within the world of TV’s
The big question that everyone asked me is “should I buy now” or what for the latest round of changes? … but whatever the change about to happen I always answer in the same way.
I say “The average consumer updates his/her TV every 5 years. During that time many changes take place, but for all the changes in the industry, our TV’s give us years of happy service. And will continue to do so whether you buy now or tomorrow… so my advice is to buy a new Tv when your old Tv needs replacing. Buy a current model, and it will give you many happy years of service… don’t wait for the latest change, because by the time that happens there will always be another up and coming change to contend with, to wait for…

I hope this insight has helped you in your decision
