Shopping for Vintage!
There are many reasons people enjoy vintage clothing, the true wearer of vintage and collector, is not at all looking for a bargain or a costume. The appeal to the wearer of vintage is exactly the same appeal and reason top designer's and their "little helper's" scour flea markets, ebay and every vintage boutique etc.
We are all looking for that perfect piece to incorporate into our personal wardrobe or a designer archive, that no one else owns or hasn't seen in sometime and needs a come back.
Designers also seach for that exquisite fabric perfectly embellished with antique glass beads, to strip them away and add to their Haute Couture!
Items are always reproduced with an added unique touch by the designer, nothing is ever new in fashion it is always rekindled or resurrected and what was once old is now new, that is how it is in my wardrobe and Boutique
If you like the Marc Jacobs trapeze coat he rekindled from the 50's or that fantastic Dior Afghan coat, why not search the auctions for a similarity using the words you read in the magazine. Such as words the writer used to describe the item, afghan velvet tapestry etc.. search for a Look A Like! of an item, not because you are saving money, because you desire something a bit more unique, original and more obtainable! You can customize and tailor the garment to your individual flair by bringing them to a seamstress and have YOUR idea's worked into it, or wear the beautiful piece as it was originally created.
My favorite search on ebay is Advanced Search and click by Stores! and always be sure you look to the left for the VINTAGE link.. Why??, because the best is all there! The seller or dealer knows his or her merchandise and knows it well, indeed!
If you are on a hunt for a spectacular "one of a kind" vintage 50's cocktail dress or a really outstanding "got to have it" piece to add to your wardrobe... its all there! Type in what you desire in the search box and an entire shopping spree appears at your fingertip's, "click click" all with "buy it now options" and some seller's even offer "best offer" options.
Always read every fashion magazine and all the books you can to familiarize yourself with different looks you like and the designers that created them. My favorite book is Secondhand Chic by Christa Weil, it is packed with information for the new vintage seeker. Then do what I do I scour ebay & my hometown vintage shops and thrifts and each time I travel I find a new shop to look for interesting vintage pieces that are "back" or deserve to "come back!" & from time to time an eccentric one of a kind piece, with that touch that artisits like myself love, for that "I feel like wearing THIS today, mood! I then decide what I will do with my new found treasure's, either add them to my personal wardrobe or to list them here on ebay for you & my Boutique clients, here at home.
Be sure to look for classic elegance with attention to detail in construction. and quality fabric. There is no comparison to the hallmark quality details of many vintage items, you have heard the saying "they just don't make 'em like they used to", well they don't!
Designer's have archives of vintage items and vintage magazines and books all for inspiration, I do too, and I enjoy wearing vintage and always will... today I recieved my ankle length denim opera coat with unbelievable details and the most elegant cut from fitted waist to the cascade of fabric to my toes, it has all the artsy flair I had hoped for... bought it on ebay in an ebay store search for 188.00 it came today and I am in love! It will be mine for awhile then off to my racks at Love me two times... for someone else to love madly once again!
I hope this inspires you to search deeper for your vintage pieces.... look deep inside those seller's closets that they call ... ebay stores!... tee hee!... Now, why not take a peek inside mine!
Love me two times
