If you decide that you want to sell your items outside of the US, you
need to be aware of Custom Restrictions & make sure the items your
selling are allowed in the countries your shipping to.
If you ship an item to a country & it's not allowed or you did not ship it the way it's suppose to be shipped, customs will seize the item & not return it. :(
Country List from the Postal Explorer Website (USPS):
http://pe.usps.gov/text/Imm/immctry.htm
Mexico for example, you can't ship jewelry there, your buyer would never receive it. Your buyer would file an Item Not Received claim, you would lose the money and the item and both you and the buyer would have a bad experience.
Mexico:
Prohibitions
Coins; banknotes; currency notes (paper money); securities payable to bearer; traveler’s checks; platinum, gold, or silver, manufactured or not; precious stones; jewelry; and other valuable articles.
Now some countries have a jewelry restriction that allows jewelry but you have to ship it a certain way.
Japan:
Restrictions:
Coins; banknotes; currency notes (paper money); securities payable to bearer; traveler’s checks; platinum, gold or silver, manufactured or not; precious stones; jewelry; and other valuable articles may only be sent in registered First-Class Mail International shipments or insured Priority Mail International parcels.
If you would like to search all of the countries at once for a specific item there is a way to do this.
http://pe.usps.gov/
Uncheck all boxes except the 'International Mail Manual (IMM)' box, then put your item in the search box & click 'search'. If you search for an item like 'shoes' remember to use words like footwear too when searching. :)
Remember, if you using UPS, FedEx or DHL for International shipping, they can impose large Brokerage Fees to your buyer above and beyond the buyers normal customs fees, you need to make sure the buyers are aware of this, buyers can refuse this fee & the fee will come back to you months later through your carriers billing.
Country Restrictions when using other carriers:
UPS: http://www.ups.com/ga/CountryRegs?loc=en_US
Fedex: http://www.fedex.com/us/international/irc/profiles/?link=2
DHL: http://www.dhl-usa.com/Locations/IntlLocnsStart.asp?nav=InternationalService/CtryDet
If you decide not to ship outside of the US and you accept PayPal for payment, make sure you have all your Preferences setup to avoid any problems if someone outside the US tries to send you a payment. See my Guide on accepting payments.
