CDs are one of the easiest items to sell or ship on eBay. But why do so many sellers charge $4, 5 or more dollars for shipping? In my guide "Follow the golden rule", I talk about what buyers and sellers want. Sellers, if you were a buyer, would you want to pay $5 to ship a CD. Heck, no!

There is a wonderful shipping option that I don't think enough eBayers use. That is USPS 1st Class mail. Almost everyone ships either Priority (which is a minimum of $4.05) or media mail, which can take a few weeks and often results in buyer complaints. 1st Class mail is usually pretty quick (within a week) and is very cheap. One CD is a mailer costs around $1.10-$1.30 to ship. Even if you buy a mailer at Walmart for $1, your shipping should not exceed $2.30. Even add one of those stupid handling fees, and you aren't even at $3!

There are many sellers on eBay who sell bulk padded mailing envelopes. I recently bought 20 envelopes for a total of $8.45 including shipping. That means the envelopes cost around $0.42 a piece. $0.42 plus $1.30, equals... not $5. So if a seller buys their envelopes in bulk (which they would be dumb not to do) and they mail the envelope first class for $1.30, and they charge $5 to ship a CD, they just made a over a $3 profit.

You will hear some sellers say that $3 covers their gas the post office, Paypal fees, etc. I hate to tell them, but that is the cost of doing business!
