Exquisite closets with beautifully crafted garment bags, coordinating padded hangers and fabric covered storage boxes aren't just for the rich and famous. Now you, too, can individualize and decorate a closet as you would any room, with the same sense of style and attention to detail as other areas of the home. Create your own individual and well-appointed space to house the fashions in your wardrobe.with sew-it-yourself patterns, fabrics and findings.
First, you might want to restructure the closet. Hiring a professional closet consultant to design and install the most efficient arrangement of poles, shelves and hooks can be costly – save money and remodel your own. Take closet measurements, analyze the volume of your possessions and either use one of the wire grid systems sold in home stores or design your own. Even something as simple as hanging tops & skirts on a double-decker pole or installing several shelves 8 inches to 9 inches apart can make a major difference in the appearance and function of your closet. Just remember two basic principles
- Use every bit of space, and
- Keep all items accessible.
Second, stitch up some closet accessories. Select a favorite fabricdesign or several fabric coordinates. Glossy chintz, broadcloth, quilted fabrics and poplin in traditional stripes or florals are popular choices.
Hangers
Shaped plastic or wooden hangers are kind to tailored coats and jackets, while tubular plastic hangers are fine for other types of garments. Even better are padded hangers, though they do take more closet space. While costly to purchase, you can make them yourself with the instructions in Butterick's Waverly sewing pattern 4156.
Add a special touch by sewing a ball button on each end of the hanger to prevent skinny straps from slipping.
Garment Bags
Fabrics need to breathe! Remove newly drycleaned garments from plastic bags and banish vinyl garment bags from your closet. Clothing stays fresher longer when stored in bags made from a cotton-rich fabric that allows some air circulation while protecting against light and airborne dust. The pattern also includes shoulder dustcovers for hangers.
Using the instructions in Butterick's Waverly sewing pattern 4156, you can also make a matching fabric shoe bag, umbrella holder or handbag organizer to hang on the door or nearby wall.
Extras
Decorating your closet can easily spill over in the the bath or bedroom. Create storage boxes to match your custom closet theme or for storage in the bath or bedroom.
Butterick pattern 6656 shows you how to pad and cover 3 sizes of oval, round and heart-shaped boxes inside and out. These are perfect for storing hats, gloves and other items.
Enjoy your custom made decorater style fabric accessories for your closet.
