If you're like me (or even nothing like me), a fan of mid-1960s Rock and Roll, you may scour the eBay listings, to replace those classic albums and 45s your mom threw out when you went away to college. Some of you remember the day you hauled a pile of Jan & Dean and Searchers albums down to the local record shop, trading them for some Uriah Heep album you haven't thought of since.

Okay, so now you're bidding on the few bands you can still recall: The Beatles, The Stones, The Byrds, The Monkees, The Mamas & Papas, Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels (uh-oh, we're starting to dip into the realms of the 'forgotten & obscure'.

I'm going to just light a little fire in this area, by suggesting 10 bands that sit in a lower tier of the world of Rock & Roll. To those of you who know what Sky Saxon ate for breakfast the day The Seeds recorded "Pushing Too Hard" - these are no-brainer bands. But for most of you, who might welcome a few tips on '60s records to pursue on eBay - well, you might appreciate these.

The Nazz: Todd Rundgrean's first recording group, out of Philadelphia. Similar to The Who  and The Move, their first LP has powerful high energy psych anthems like "Open My Eyes" and "She's Going Down". It also features the first recorded version of  Rundgren's solo hit, "Hello, It's Me".

The Shadows Of Knight: Hailing from the Arlington Heights suburb of Chicago, they produced what is easily the best Garage-Punk album of all time, "Gloria" (or "G-L-O-R-I-A"). Every cut is brilliant in its execution. Powerful, sassy, and WILD. The Shadows of Knight played electric Chicago Blues like nobody else. Guitar feedback drones away while the band literally attacks such standards as "I Got My Mojo Workin'", "Oh, Yeah", and of course, their hit cover version of Van Morrison's "Gloria".

The Turtles: The Turtles began as The Crossfires, an LA surf band, from Westchester (near LAX). DJ Reb Foster turned them into a a poor man's Byrds, a Folk-Rock band with punk Attitude). After one album, they switched to Power Pop, racking up about ten Top-40 hits over four years. Yet, they are largly forgotten today, except for monster hit "Happy Together". Howard Kaylan & Mark Volman became The Phluorescent Leach & Eddie (Flo & Eddie, for short), and the rest is Mystery.

The Cryan Shames: Jangly Power Pop from Chicago. This was the sound you heard at school dances back in 1966. Their "Sugar & Spice" LP is the one to get - it's a perfect sampling of midwest pop. Similar to The Buckinghams, early Grassroots, The Outsiders.

The Critters: This versatile Jersy outfit boasted Two Top-10 hits in NYC, before Uncle Sam came a-callin'. "Younger Girl" flew up the charts on the east coast, while in the west, it was The Hondells version. The "Younger Girl" LP is brilliant, with shades of The Beatles, The Association, and The Zombies. Don Ciccone later joined the Four Seasons, singing lead on the hit, "December 1963 (Oh What A Night)".

Left Banke: Rock & Roll Meets Bach (ahhhh, Bach!). The "Walk Away Renee" LP commands pretty good bucks these days, but the sound in the grooves is worth every penny. Michael Brown went on to form the '70s band Stories ("Brother Louie"). These New Yorkers truly created their own sound, a unique pairing of British Invasion pop with Baroque. When "Renee" was released in October 1966, only The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" sounded anything remotely like it.

Bobby Fuller Four: Their powerful cover of Sonny Curtis' "I Fought The Law" was a perfect record. It was what Buddy Holly might have sounded like in the 1960s - an incredible blend of Tex Mex and Hollywood Folk Rock. The band was poised for stardom, when the unthinkable happened. Bobby Fuller was found dead in the parking garage of his Hollywood apartment. Gasoline had been poured down his throat. It was officially classified as a suicide.

Blues Project: Yo, we're back in NYC again. Blues Project were probably the first pairing of Rock & Roll and Jazz. In 1967, they probably left a lot of Top-40 DJs scratching their heads. But not for long...the group evolved into Blood, Sweat & Tears. "Best album would have to be Blues Project Live At Town Hall", with "Electric Flute Thing", "No Time Like The Right Time", and "Wake Me Shake Me".

The Outsiders: "Time Won't Let Me is a rock classic, but it isn't the only decent song this Cleveland, Ohio band produced. Their cover of Spencer Davis' "Keep On Runnin'", the Isley Brothers' "Respectable" (almost as good as the Yardbirds), "Was It Really Real" (I dunno, was it REAL for you?) are all very strong. Sonny Gerraci hit #1 in 1970 with "Precious And Few", fronting the band Climax.

The Gentrys: Memphis was home to the seven young musicians who made up The Gentrys. In 1965, they went Top-20 with "Keep On Dancing". The LP of the same name is filled with everything from prototypical Country Rock to pounding Garage Folk-Rock anthems (like the first Turtles' LP). It's a great party record. In 1969, they hit gold again with a cover of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl".
