My advice for anyone looking through their closets for unmined gems is to ask yourself "would I buy this?". As tempting as it is to totally liquidate everything you haven't worn in ages, beware of selling items that have really seen better days. I think this is particularly true with ladies clothing. When I look through my closets, or my friends' closets, for items we can most profitably sell, I only hit the "brand name" or "designer" items. Foregt the stuff you bought on sale at some deep discount super store. The amount you'd make is erased once you pay your insertion fees, paypal charges, time spent driving to the post office. Name recognition is probably the most important hook when writing an item title, and nothing looks better than the Biggies like Calvin Klein, Prada, Diane Von Furtenburg, Chloe, etc... and mid-priced designers such as Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic and the Gap are all big draws. Don't forget the brands like Etc..., Carlisle, Worth, and kids' brands like Chez Ami, Just Ducky, Beaux and Belles. The "Trunk show" brands are all very appealing. Use them in the title!

Kids clothes need to be as un-stained as possible. I have loads of adorable mini Boden stuff that my daughter has worn out beyond hope; I just wouldn't want to bother listing it if I am forever having to describe this stain or that mark. Leave that stuff for the charity shop.

Check your previously worn items carefully for defects, stains, missing buttons, zippers that work. My favorite thing in the world is my iron. Especially with children's clothes, it can make a world of difference in the appearance of the garment.

Make sure you are selling for the appropriate season. As in retail, the clothes for sale are a season ahead; in July and August you want to be selling fall and winter. In January, Februrary and March it's all spring and summer stuff.

Use Febreze or other fabric freshener if the garment's been hanging around a while. If a dry clean only garment needs to be freshened up, just say in your description "item may need to be dry cleaned upon arrival". Otherwise you could spend a fortune drycleaning items that may never even sell.

Take the time to measure your garment, flat measurements are fine, but if they aren't in your item description (particularly for kid's pants and ladies items) you'll get a zillion emails asking questions. And if something is a 6 but fits like a 4, list it as both!

Add a description of the fabric, is it machine washable, what is it made of, how well it travels, etc... and always give options for your items, like "This sweater would be perfect with the tweed trousers I am selling" Or "consider this wrap dress over jeans or trousers". Give the buyer options that make them imagine they really need what you have!

I find the final touch of  packing an item attractively to be a great way to get repeat business and have cutomers get a great first impression of the item. I went to an on-line paper and ribbon store and for $25.00 got the cutest tissue paper you can imagine, an absolute huge pile of it! I've had it for over 2 years and it is the perfect way to wrap up garments. If a package is well wrapped it travels better and looks better right out of the bag or box.

Always stay in communication with your buyers, and ship out as quickly as possible. And when listing, keep your items within similar categories. I always sell my children's clothes together, then I'll have a week where it's all ladies clothes, then another week where it's all home decor. That helps buyers who are looking for something to consider other similar items. Happy selling!
