Selling Liberty Seated Dollars on EBAY is an excellent way to get a good price for your coins. You expose your items to a large market of active buyers. If you are selling Liberty Seated Dollars you are selling items for which there is a lot of collector demand. Here are some bits of advice for the seller of Liberty Seated Dollars, especially those who know very little about the coins:
1) BEWARE of COUNTERFEITS!!!! There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of counterfeit Liberty Seated Dollars sold on EBAY. Sometimes these are sold by persons who don't know they are selling counterfeits. Sometimes there is intentional deception. If you are unsure of whether your coin is genuine or not contact a knowledgeable coin dealer to help you to determine the coin's authenticity.
2) NEVER CLEAN YOUR COINS!!! If you think that your coin will look better if you just wipe it off with a rag or rub it between your fingers or, heaven forbid, use a brush on it, you should know that you are taking value away from the coin. Cleaned coins are worth considerably less, 35%-50% less than their uncleaned counterparts. The major grading companies like NGC and PCGS will not encapsulate a cleaned coin. ANACS or SEGS will encapsulate cleaned coins but they designate the cleaning and discount the value accordingly. NEVER, EVER CLEAN A LIBERTY SEATED DOLLAR.
3) PROVIDE THE BEST PICTURE or SCAN THAT YOU CAN. Collectors of Liberty Seated Dollars are not just looking for a certain date, although different dates are very important, they are looking for nice looking coins. The better that you can provide images of the details of your coins, the more likely they are to attract attention. If you are selling a "CC" dollar get a close-up of the mintmark. Otherwise I recommend a good front (obverse) and back (reverse) image along with a close-up of the "Liberty" on the front shield. Make sure that you provide an image of the actual coin you are selling, IT WILL NOT DO TO COPY AN IMAGE OF A SIMILAR DOLLAR ON EBAY. This is sometimes done and I believe it is fraudulent.
4) DON'T GRADE THE COIN IF YOU ARE NOT KNOWLEDGEABLE. Many listings indicate that grading is subjective, which it is, but it is not altogether subjective. There is a surprising degree of consensus on coins for those who are knowledgeable. If you aren't a trained grader then I recommend that you don't offer an opinion. Sellers tend to overrate their items and buyers tend to underrate them. Again a visit to the knowledgeable dealers in your area might help you here in describing your coin.
5) MENTION ALL PROBLEMS WITH THE COIN. If you know, for instance, that the coin has been cleaned, that there is a scratch, that the rim is bumped, that there has been a repair of a hole, mention the problem and be honest about it.
6) OFFER A RETURN PRIVILEGE. The unfortunate feature of selling on EBAY is that no one can accurately grade a Liberty Seated Dollar from a photo or scan. You need to use a jeweler's glass to look closely at the surface to see if there has been damage or cleaning or if the toning is original or artificial. Because Liberty Seated Dollars require such careful attention to detail you should make it possible for a buyer to return the coin should she find a problem upon close inspection. You will want to protect yourself by mentioning the time frame that you will offer for the return and take precautions that someone doesn't send back a coin different from the one you sold.
I offer these as tips for a would-be seller on EBAY of Liberty Seated Dollars. I have collected these dollars for twenty+ years and find them to be one of the greatest series of coins ever produced by the U.S. Mint.
