Believe it or not, many of the set decorations, books, props and other items on film sets come from.....yes, Ebay! Especially for filmmakers on a tight budget, Ebay can be a treasure trove of items from the 30s, 40s, 50s or 60s...and savvy Hollywood players know that film buffs do pay attention to the authenticity of even the tiniest details - from books to ashtrays. Certain types of table settings, decor, etc...can make or break the believablity of a film setting.
If you are a seller, recognize this and if you are selling a vintage item, you might note somewhere in the title or listing that it would be ideal for a film or play where authentic props are needed. You may still end up selling the item to a collector rather than a prop assistant for a movie, but I've sold some of my items to some Hollywood people and then actually been THRILLED to see it appear in the move. Okay, maybe not in a starring role but still, MY items have appeared in supporting roles.
I'm just waiting for the day when the Oscars have a category called, "Best Leading or Supporting Role for a Hollywood Prop." If they do, my items will be ready to play our part.
You can, too. Use keywords like "Hollywood" "Vintage" "Rare " (but only if it is)...."Set design" "Film design" "Stagecraft"...whatever will get the RIGHT bidders to see your item.
