Self Defense Pepper Sprays are a great way to temporarily disable someone who is trying to attack you. The main ingredient in most Pepper Sprays today is OC - Oleoresin Capsicum.
You may know OC - Oleoresin Capsicum better as the stuff that makes hot peppers hot . Remember the last time you bit into a jalapeno (mild) or habanero (very hot)? Although you may enjoy eating hot peppers, OC has an entirely different effect when made into a spray and sent into an attacker's face. When OC is sprayed in an attacker's face, it acts as an inflammatory agent, capable of almost instantly making the attacker's eyes clamp shut and dilating the capillaries of the eye causing a temporary blindness. When inhaled, OC causes a quick inflammation of the breathing tissues and uncontrollable coughing. OC also causes a painful burning sensation on the skin.
The effects of OC are temporary, but very effective, and usually last between 20-30 minutes. If you ever have to use a pepper spray on an attacker, use this time to get away quickly and ensure your own health and safety.
OC Sprays usually come in types of sprays: stream, mist, fog, gel and foam. Of the liquid pepper sprays, the fogger sprays are the most effective because they put out a super fine mist that is difficult to avoid. If you do use a fogger, be careful to direct the spray away from you, because it can also get in your own eyes if you move toward the misted area. The recent introduction of gel and foam pepper sprays are great because they are difficult to wipe away which makes them very effective. Streams and mists are also work well, but they do have to be aimed correctly toward an attacker's face for maximum effect.
Each individual pepper spray product has an effective range (ex. 15-20 feet), and the sizes available usually range from 1/2 ounce to 4 ounces. Pepper Sprays contain a varying number of bursts of spray depending on size and model. Pepper sprays are rated in Scoville Heat units (SHUs), with 2 million scoville heat units being close to a very hot habenero pepper.
