Everything About Stun Guns is the most comprehensive information about stun guns for you to understand how stun guns work and how they can protect you.

Stun Guns.

Advantages: Continuous Charges. Portability. Simple to use.

Disadvantages: User must be within striking distance from the attacker.

Stun Gun Definition.

Stun gun is a non-lethal, legal in most states way to deter possible assailants. it is a hand-held battery-powered device designed to deliver short bursts of electrical energy that causes temporary muscle paralysis. A stun gun does not shoot anything. Instead it looks similar to a portable phone, with two prongs protruding at one end. when you push the pronged end against an attacker and pull the trigger, an electric charge passes into his body.

Stun guns deliver high-voltage, low-amperage shocks that interrupt the body's signals to the nervous system, which makes a person unable to physically function. As the amperage is very low, no serious or permanent injury is inflicted. However the voltage immobilizes your attacker for several minutes. In simple terms, this means that the charge has alot of pressure behind it, but not that much intensity. When you press the stun gun against an attacker and hold the trigger, the charge passes into the attacker's body. Since it has a fairly high voltage, the charge will pass through heavy clothing and skin. But the charge is not intense enough to damage the attacker's body unless it is applied for extended periods of time. Police departments, security agents, and individuals desiring protection against attack use stun guns. They have proven to be an excellent defensive device as they have incredible stopping power and yet remain non-lethal.

How Stun Gun Work

A stun gun is actually a very simple piece of equipment similar to a transistor radio. It is powered by a battery. The battery sends power to a circuit, which contains several transformers, which increases the voltage within the electronic circuit. Then it goes to an oscillator, which provides a fluctuating current to get the correct amperage (amperage is the unit of electrical charge or strength). Th electric charge goes to a capacitor. The capacitor builds up a charge, and releases it to the electrodes. the electrodes are simply two prongs of conducting metal positioned in the circuit with a gap between them at the top of the stun gun. The electrodes are purposely placed apart because they naturally want to complete the circuit by allowing the charge to go from one electrode to another. If you fill this gap with the attacker's body (conductor), the electrical pulses dump electricity into the attacker's central nervous system.

Stun Gun Effects

A stun gun acts on muscular and neutral systems, rather than relying on pain. Stun Guns work by delivering a high voltage shock to a person it is being used on. The discharge over-stimulates the attacker's muscles causing them into work extremely hard and fast, but inefficiently, resulting in loss of balance and control. this rapid work cycle instantly depletes blood sugar by converting it into lactic acid. Without blood sugar, the muscled have no energy to function, rendering the attacker immobile. the person getting "zapped" will feel a total loss of muscle control coupled with a severe mental shock, maybe resulting in dizziness, nausea, etc. it is not uncommon for some people to lose control over certain body functions and vomit, urinate, or defecate upon getting shocked. As a general rule, a 1/4 second contact will repel and startle the attacker, giving intense pain and muscle contractions. A one-second charge can drop the attacker to the ground with intense muscle spasms, feeling dazed and confused for up to 15 minutes. A five -second charge can leave him feeling like he fell from a two-story building and landed on the street.

Low Voltage Stun Gun vs. High Voltage Stun Guns

Stun guns have the power to deliver 100,000 to 1,900,000 Volts and up to 3 amperes (amps) to the human body. Even though the voltage sounds like it  could cause death, it is actually harmless to the body and causes only temporary discomfort. The amperage of the charge is what controls the strength and 3 amps delivers by the gun is sufficient to cause temporary problems, but not harm. The actual affect on the body is that the neurotransmitters are temporarily scrambled, making it difficult to perform their functions properly. The nerves affected most are muscles. The internal organs and brain are not affected. the overall effect is dependent upon the size of the attacker, the voltage of the stun gun, and amount of time the stun gun is applied. If the stun gun has low voltage, the perpetrator is large, and the gun was only applied for a very short period of time, it may not disable the attacker. Therefore the higher voltage stun gun you use the better your chances to immobilize the bigger perpetrator within a short while.

Stun Gun vs. Taser

A hand held stun gun is the most commonly purchased for personal protection. It is small enough to fit in a handbag.. The benefit to this style is the ability to conceal and carry it around. A taser is a stun gun that has electrodes attached to wires and a gas powered explosive charge. The trigger is pulled and the electrodes shoot out 15-20 feet and engage the attacker from a safe distance. Barbs built into the electrodes help to fix them to the attacker to increase the probability of a direct hit. the problem is that the electrodes could miss the attacker and there is only one shot available.

FAQ

Can you stun yourself when using a stun gun?

Under no conditions can you suffer a charge back to your own body, even if the assailant touches you while you are using a stun gun on him.

Will a stun gun work through clothing?

Absolutely, stun guns are designed to be 100% effective even through typical clothing. Electricity has no problem going through most kinds of clothing, even thick jackets or coats. The exception would be if it is a rubber material such as a rubber rain jacket or something similar.

Why use a stun gun?

A stun gun gives you a tactical advantage of surprise because an assailant does not expect you to have this type of weapon. In addition, most stun guns are easily concealed and an assailant may not be even realize what you have in your hand until the very unlucky assailant is zapped. Since stun guns are a non-lethal form of self-defense, they are a very popular option to using a firearm.

How do I use a stun gun?

Do not discharge the unit into the air for more than one second. longer durations can damage the units. To use a stu gun, hold the electrodes firmly against an attacker. Target an area that is harder and slower to move like the upper shoulder or the upper hip. The arms or hands are not good attack points because they can be moved away too quickly. To completely subdue the attacker, the stun gun must be continuously applied for a few seconds.

Which is better, a Stun Gun or Taser?

both are excellent self-defense devices. However we believe a Taser is more suited for home defense and a stun gun is better for everyday walking around defense. Tasers shoot two darts at a range of about 15 feet. however, the large size of the Taser is not practical for carrying around on a regular basis.
