Selecting the right frame for your oil painting can be a challenge, but following a few basic rules will greatly simplify the process:
1. Choose a style:  Plein Air Traditional or Ornate.
2. Choose a color:  Gold or Silver.
3. Choose to have a linen liner or not.

1. Style refers to a painting being formal or informal. Ornate frames tend to work well on large works or paintings of a classical nature.  A Plein Air Traditional frame shouldn’t draw attention to itself, hence it looks great with landscapes, and displays well in most room settings.

2. Color is a critical element as the wrong colored frame may either dominate or wash-out the painting, whereas the right hue will complement the painting’s beauty and colors.  Gold frames are appropriate for paintings using warm colors such as red and gold while silver frames work well with pastels and cool tones like blue and green.

3. linen liner is a matter of personal preference; some people feel a linen liner makes a painting “pop” from its frame like a window within a window. Others believe a linen liner is “too fussy” and prefer a non distinct liner that simplifies the look. There’s no right or wrong to this.
