Your personal safety is your most valuable possession. Preparation is essential to protect yourself from dangerous situations before they happen. What would you do if someone broke into your house while you were home? How would you defend yourself and your loved ones? Many people want to own a weapon, but cannot bear the thought of shooting or stabbing an intruder. For such people, stun guns are a great option.

Stun guns are also great protection on the road. Carry a stun gun in your glove box to keep yourself and your family safe when you travel. When your car breaks down or you have a flat tire, a stun gun lets you feel confident and secure, even in the worst of neighborhoods. If you take public transportation, carrying a stun gun in your pocket will ensure your safety at any time of the day or night. You no longer have to worry about your wife or son riding the subway home from work. A stun gun in their purse or pocket means peace of mind for both of you.

Stun guns range in size, shape and voltage. Some are the size of cell phones or large pens. Because they can fit in the palm of your hand, they are very discreet and convenient to carry in a small handbag. Others are shaped like big batons or large blocks. The look intimidating and usually have a high voltage, making them very effective for home and auto security.

Regardless of the voltage you choose, stun guns will not cause a person lasting physical harm. They emit anywhere from 350 to 775,000 volts when their prongs are placed on a person. The electric current confuses the nerves that control an attacker's muscles, rendering the person immobile for a short amount of time. The person will be passive and a bit confused for several minutes. It usually only takes half a second of contact with a stun gun for the weapon to be effective. The voltage will never pass from your attacker's body into your own, even if you are standing in a puddle or on a wet surface. The voltage will be contained within your attacker's system, and you will not be shocked. Despite its short term physical effects, a stun gun will not cause a person lasting harm when used properly.

Many people do not know the difference between a stun gun and a taser. The words are often used interchangeably. They both use electric current to neutralize an aggressive assailant. However, there is a big difference between the two. Tasers fire out prongs on wire cords from an average distance of 15 feet. The prongs need to be rewound before they can be fired again. A stun gun can be used multiple times during the same attack, since it delivers its shock when you touch its prongs to the attacker.

Contact your local law enforcement officials to find out the voltage limits for a personal stun gun in your area. Generally, the higher the voltage, the more quickly the stun gun will stop an attacker. However, you need to be mindful of local laws regulating self defense in your area.

Stun guns are a great way to protect yourself and those you love. Many police officers, soldiers and civilians alike ensure their personal safety and the safety of others with stun guns every day. They are effective weapons for self defense, yet they do not cause lasting harm to your assailant. Preventing permanent damage to an attacker will keep you and your family safe from legal troubles down the road, and they sleep better at night knowing they can defend themselves without injuring anyone else. You will sleep better at night, too, knowing that a stun gun is protecting the people you love the most.

Stay Safe,
