One of the best tools Sears has sold over the years is the radial arm saw.

The radial arm saw is one of the most versatile woodworking tools you can have in your shop. The radial arm saw works wonders for cutting odd and weird angles, bevel or mitre,  and is a super tool for ripping, and has the ability to work as a moulder or sander with the correct attachments. The radial saw also is a superb machine for wood working involving mass production. My father and I have made thousands and thousands of engineering stakes over the years using our Craftsman radial arm saw. It is easy to set up and a dream to use. 

In the 1980's Sears introduced the Craftsman Deluxe Electronic Radial Arm Saw. It was touted as a new and improved saw, using electronic readouts for figuring cuts.

If you have a Craftsman Electronic Radial Arm Saw, it is considered a great tool for the shop, but can be a nightmare to use if you don't have an owner's manual.

The electronic owner's manual is a whopping 76 pages long, one of the most extensive user guides Craftsman ever produced.

First and foremost, owner's manuals will teach you about safety in regards to the machine you are using. I honestly believe that safety in the shop is paramount. Who wants to spend an afternoon in the emergency room because they didn't read the owner's manual? This manual will enable you to understand the safety issues while working around their radial arm saws.

Aside from shop safety of electronic radial arm saws, the manual also includes aligning and truing the saw. This is super important for accurate cuts, especially with the electronic models.  One of the biggest problems with the electronic saws is knowing how to align the arm properly and truing the blade correctly. If the saw has ever been bumped hard, or has been abused in its life, there is a huge chance that the saw is out of alignment. The manual will tell you how and where to adjust the saw properly.

One of the most frequent questions I get  is "How do I use the electronic idicator system?" The manual explains all the functions...bevel, miter, reset, elevation, rip. Overall, the basic system is easy to read, but setting the encoders is a different story. The manual shows you step by step how to set the encoder, and will give you the understanding of why the saw MUST be square and aligned in order to use the LED display.

Another frequent question is "Where is the battery?" The manual shows how and where the battery is found.

The manual also tells you how to make adjustments for wear. Should you have problems with your saw, this manual has lubrication charts, troubleshooting, and over 16 pages of exploded views and part number lists.
