Drive the Scion xA and tC for thrilling speed and FUN!
Here's a car that anyone can afford, from the quick-footed teen to the young family or commuter...And you WILL enjoy this Japanese-built quality speedster that gets 37 miles per gallon.
I consider the Scion xA (now replaced by the bigger, bulkier Scion xD) to be like affordable Mini-Coopers. Tight steering, comfortable seating, quick throttle response and fuel economy that eclipses just about anything else out there.
There is a HOST of after-market performance parts you can add to your Scion xA to give it more power, tighter handling and faster braking. If you look on Ebay, you'll find thousands of xA add-ons.
I prefer my 2006 Scion xA stock with optional automatic. I used to have a 5-speed, which is very peppy, but the highway rpm seemed to strain the engine and hurt fuel economy, so I switched to the automatic and instead of getting 32 mpg highway, I have pushed it to 38 mpg highway. My automatic isn't as fun to drive, but still a blast to own.
These cars are getting harder to find and I feel they are the best value on the market today. Typically, you can find one for between $10,000 and $13,000 with super low miles, or if you want one with more miles, there are tons of bargains on pre-'06 models. I love the 1.5 litre four cylinder engine. It is geared almost perfectly for quick accelleration and passing.
You can even make it look like a Mini-Cooper by adding aluminum wheels, lower profile tires and painting or taping below the doors in between the wheel wells. Black paint on that bottom piece really gives it a Cooper look, but with 4-door capability and size.
The newer Scion xD is the bulker, younger sister to the original xA. Not as responsive, not near the handling or power, but a descent ride. For a reliable, fun ride that gets you blood pumping and is eco-friendly, try to find a nice used Scion xA, trick it out with performance options and have a fantastic ride for under $15,000 with the capabilities of a Cooper at half the price.
